We recently had a mixed team in Bangui, CAR (MSH, Futures, and others)
and we all picked up a USB Virus (ref: NTT0509.exe) from the National
AIDS Office computers (swapping USB memory Sticks). I keep my norton
current but it walked right through it. As with you all, our IT guys in
the US office admitted to starting to see this more and more. Across the
team, folks had different anti-virus software including at least one
product from France, and everybody seemed to catch part of the cocktail
but no one's software caught it all. Most of the Viruses were old, very
localized (geographically) and pretty low-key. Once you started looking
for a solution, there were suggestions on how to clear it. when I got
home, and spent 2 hours on it, it was pretty easy to clear (if you know
where to look and follow instructions - not for the faint of heart).

The take away message is that it is not as simple as it was where one
Anti-Virus package takes care of you.
Need to be more cautious and have a back-up solution. If we had sent
files around via email this would not have happened, but then with the
power off for 3 hours and screaming deadlines, it was hard to resist
that USB stick.

Cheers, Tim

Hello all ...

Recently, several of our country offices have reported that Symantec
anti-virus has failed to detect viruses, and they've tried others that
worked betterm including F-Secure and Kaspersky. We're noew deploying
some of those products on a case-by-case basis

In this general area, we've also receioved recommendations for GFI
EndPoint Protection, and for an appliance product called Cyberoam.

We'd appreciate any comments or suggestions about good or bad
experiences with these or other anti-malware solutions for country
office settings.

Thanks!

We have Trend Anti-Virus deployed globally and have had the same
problem, it's missed several viruses in recent months (all in Africa and
all variants of existing viruses). We've deployed Kaspersky and AVG(?!)
selectively to squash the outbreaks and Trend has been very responsive
when we've submitted samples, but the fact that we're having to submit
samples is giving me pause.
We've not decided to move away just yet, but we're keeping an eye on our
solution. I don't think anything is bulletproof, but Kaspersky seems to
be working well and I've used NOD32 before with good results. I don't
recommend Trend at this point. I'd be interested to hear back on your
results if you switch.
