Daniel,

That helped! The older server running FreeTDS 0.63
has an environment variable "LANG=en_US".
Setting something similar in ~/.profile reduced the tsql output considerably!

try:
LANG="en_US.UTF-8" ./tsql -SPROD -Ujohn -Psmith

That's for utf-8.
