Some additional info.
TDSDUMPs for tsql and isql connections look different.
Note: the name of the database I am connecting to is "needles". The
name is being passed with tsql but not with isql if I read the dumps
properly.
I don't know if you fixed this, but i ran into exactly the same issue with ASA9 and found out that only Sybase 12 is supported through this method(from reading your posts, our sucesses and failures are identical). In order for me to connect from *nix to W2k3 running ASA9.01 i needed to install the ODBC->ODBC Bridge software.

PS. If you find that this is incorrect and you are able to connect just using freetds and unixodbc, please let me know. :)

Something's missing.
As you say, the tsql connection is passing "needles" correctly, and the
isql one is not. We're looking at offset 179 in the login packet,
which, according to http://www.freetds.org/tds.html#login, is the
Servername field.
We know that there's nothing isql itself can do set that field; there's
no interface to that part of the login packet. (At least that's true
for db-lib; I don't think there's one for ODBC, either.) That means
FreeTDS is inserting the 'SYBASE' string. Why would it do that? That's
the default last-ditch name, what it uses when it can't find any name.
However, src/tds/config.c *did* do something right, because it correctly
looked up the ip address, port, and TDS version. No chance you have a
[SYBASE] entry in freetds.conf, is there?
I suggest you set TDSDUMPCONFIG, try both commands again, and compare
them. Are they looking up the same name, and finding the same entries?
