Correct. Your configuration files are also fine.

I tested the pool server last night (using the latest development
snapshot). No problem. It should work. You might want to try it, too,
both because it includes Brian's work from earlier this year, and
because we're due for a new release soon.
Could you try stripping out your locale information from your
environment? Maybe that's tripping something up (which we'd want to
fix, of course).
Also, now that we're in this deep, how about running the pool server
under gdb, and posting the backtrace? At least we'd know what function
is breaking.
