James,

Is there a command that you can give me that I can try from the command line
to create conftest.c ?I have checked the permissions as you suggested. They
are ok as everything is owned and run by root. The same error message comes
up.

:( That wasn't much help, eh?

I think the "too few arguments" error is a red herring. What's weird is
that conftest.c can't be created:

> checking for C compiler default output... cat: cannot open conftest.c

Any chance there's a permissions issue?

This for sure: if cat can't create the .c file, there's no way gcc will
compile it or install will install it.
