This is strange, somehow the linker reacts differently while linking
different libraries, but I don't see the difference. This one breaks:

/bin/bash ../../libtool --mode=link gcc -m64 -O3 -m64 -Wl,-s
-L/opt/unixODBC/lib -o libtds.la -rpath /opt/freetds/lib -version-info 2:0:0
libtds_objects.la -lsocket -lnsl ../replacements/libreplacements.la
-L/usr/local/lib -L/opt/gnu/lib -R/usr/local/lib -R/opt/gnu/lib
/usr/ccs/bin/ld -G -h libtds.so.2 -o .libs/libtds.so.2.0 -z allextract
./.libs/libtds_objects.a ../replacements/.libs/libreplacements.a -z
defaultextract -R/usr/local/lib -R/opt/gnu/lib -L/opt/unixODBC/lib
./.libs/libtds_objects.a -L/usr/local/lib -L/opt/gnu/lib -lsocket -lnsl
../replacements/.libs/libreplacements.a -R/usr/local/lib -R/opt/gnu/lib -lc
-s
ld: warning: file ./.libs/libtds_objects.a(mem.o): wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64
ld: warning: file ../replacements/.libs/libreplacements.a(asprintf.o): wrong
ELF class: ELFCLASS64

This one works quite fine:

/bin/bash ../../libtool --mode=link gcc -m64 -O3 -m64 -Wl,-s
-L/opt/unixODBC/lib -o libct.la -rpath /opt/freetds/lib -version-info 1:0:0
ct.lo cs.lo blk.lo ctutil.lo ../tds/libtds_objects.la -lsocket -lnsl
../replacements/libreplacements.la -L/usr/local/lib -L/opt/gnu/lib
-R/usr/local/lib -R/opt/gnu/lib
/usr/ccs/bin/ld -G -h libct.so.1 -o .libs/libct.so.1.0 .libs/ct.o .libs/cs.o
.libs/blk.o .libs/ctutil.o -z allextract ../tds/.libs/libtds_objects.a
../replacements/.libs/libreplacements.a -z defaultextract -R/usr/local/lib
-R/opt/gnu/lib -L/opt/unixODBC/lib ../tds/.libs/libtds_objects.a
-L/usr/local/lib -L/opt/gnu/lib -lsocket -lnsl
../replacements/.libs/libreplacements.a -R/usr/local/lib -R/opt/gnu/lib -lc
-s
[... no errors ...]

If I add "-64" to the linker command, the I get a nice 64 bit library anyway
which passes 'make check' in most tests.
That's strange. The stuff was configured with "--host=sparcv9-sun-solaris2",
