Nope, that's not dead code. ISTR documenting that so-called feature
somewhere.

I want to remove the "if ... given as NULL" behavior. We have lots of ways
to set dump file names, and I don't think having a default one is any help,
especially because it's a security hazard. Anyone see any reason to keep it
the way it is?
