ok now my first 3 tests are working so I can assume that I should have no problems configuring PHP with freetds... I hope :)

No, ours was configured for 1088 (probably someone's birthday).  That's what made things so confusing.

I had the same problem and tracked it down to a non-standard port being
used for SQLServer 2000.  It took a long time to find someone who knew what
the port number was.  The new versions of ODBC for SQL Server have an auto
port-searching capability.  I found setting the TDSDUMP variable to a
filename and looking at the dump output helpful -- and, well, modifying the
actual code to find out what was happening and then modifying it back again.
