I'm no expert on the JDBC driver, but my understanding is:

This is the latest version. It is probably the one to use, as it has many
more methods implemented than the tested version. However, I treat it as
(good) alpha code.

The snapshot is, as far as I know, being actively maintained and updated.
Lots of people use it, and there have even been reports of it being used in
production, although I don't think this is recommended (at least without
lots of testing at your end). I think at the end of the day, if you want
something that's guaranteed to work and supported, you're going to have to
shell out. Merant (www.merant.com), for example, produce a commercial
driver.
Having said that, I've been using the FreeTDS version for a couple of months
with no problems, and it's certainly an excellent piece of coding. For more
