Mrrph? Am I missing something? Is this *supposed* to work?

A dblib programmer has to use dbreadtext & Co. to read text fields. Is the
server
converting the text field to varchar(255) implicitly before the (I assume)
ODBC driver
ever sees it? Or is the ODBC driver expected to do some fancy footwork to
make text
fields act like normal data types?

My users, you see, had to keep it short. No silly-ass text fields for them,
no sir.
Nothing by God-fearing varchars. Keep it short or don't say it at all, that
was my
motto. Or else.

Ahem.
