CCE Tompkins is offering Master Gardener volunteer training beginning in September 2016. This training is only offered every two years. Applications are due by August 7 and interviews will be held in mid to late August.

The Master Gardener Program is a national program of trained volunteers who work in partnership with their county Cooperative Extension office to expand educational outreach throughout the community by providing home gardeners with research-based information. Master Gardeners assist with gardening projects in their communities, teach classes and workshops, plant and maintain demonstration gardens at CCETC, provide information and soil pH testing at events, and answer gardening questions. Volunteers also participate in specially organized tours, events and social outings.

The cost for training is $75 and scholarships are available. More information, an application and training schedule can be downloaded from the CCETC Master Gardener page  http://ccetompkins.org/gardening/master-gardeners

This year Tompkins County is joining with Tioga and Broome counties to pilot a 'flipped classroom' model for Master Gardener training in New York State that will be more active, hands-on and engaging. Trainees will watch videos on specific gardening topics on their own time, then the trainees will meet monthly for active, hands-on learning sessions at a variety of horticulture sites in Tompkins, Tioga and Broome Counties.

Video-viewing sessions will also be organized at CCE for those without access to a computer, and carpooling will be arranged to the monthly group sessions.
