The following classes, workshops and events are presented by or in partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County.


2012 Hydrilla Update & Volunteer Recognition Reception
Wednesday, November 7, 6:30pm reception, 7:00-8:45pm presentation
at Borg-Warner Room, Tompkins County Public Library, 101 E. Green Street, Ithaca
This public information session will provide an overview of hydrilla control efforts in 2012, including the results of monitoring for drinking water safety and for herbicide effectiveness. Presenters include Roxy Johnson, City of Ithaca Watershed Coordinator; Anne Wildman of the Tompkins County Health Department; and Bob Johnson, aquatic plant ecologist. Sharon Anderson of CCE-Tompkins will moderate. A reception at 6:30pm will recognize the work of volunteer “Hydrilla Hunters” and others who monitored the lake and inlet all summer and who helped inform the community of ways to prevent hydrilla’s spread.  Refreshments will be served, and John Abel of the West Shore Homeowners Association will give a brief talk. The reception and update session are both free and open to the public, and are sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County, the Hydrilla Task Force of the Cayuga Lake Watershed, and the Cayuga Lake Watershed Network. "How to Buy Local Meat" Class
Thursday, November 8, 6:00-8:00pm
at Cooperative Extension Education Center, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca
With all the excitement about local foods, many people are discovering the option of buying their meat locally. This FREE class will provide an overview of the claims and terms used in meat marketing, an explanation of the various cuts, and also will feature a panel of farmers who will talk about their farms and methods and answer questions.  The class is directed to consumers who are looking for education and information about buying locally raised meats. Pre-registration is encouraged so that we can make sufficient handouts.  Pre-register by calling CCE-Tompkins at 607-272-2292 or email mnl28 AT cornell.edu.  This class is supported by the Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research & Education (SARE) program. SARE is a program of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Hide-Tanning Weekend--FOR ADULTS
Friday-Sunday, November 9-11 (Fri 5:30-8pm, Sat 9am-6pm, Sun 9am-6pm)
at 4-H Acres, 418 Lower Creek Road, Ithaca
In this workshop, you will learn to take a raw deer hide and transform it into a finished piece of buckskin by an all-natural process called "wetscrape braintanning". Each participant will be guided throughout the process by experienced braintanner Justin Sutera to ensure that everyone goes home with a successfully tanned hide. Other tanning methods such as dry scrape, hair on tanning, buffalo robe tanning and even bark tanning will be discussed. Bring a notebook and be prepared to learn lots of great tips based on direct tanning experience of the instructors. If you put in the hard work required you will leave the workshop with not only a beautiful finished hide but also the knowledge to produce quality hides on your own. Finger Lakes Cheese Trail Open House

Learn about the wonderful variety of cheeses produced here in the Finger Lakes by visiting local cheese producers and sampling their products. The Finger Lakes Cheese Trail is an organization of cheese producers from throughout the Finger Lakes who make artisan cheeses from milk produced at their family farms.  Great cheeses are being made, ranging from English style raw milk cheddars, cheese curd, gouda and swiss types from dairy cow milk, to blue cheeses, chevre and feta from goats and sheep milk. GARDENS 4 HUMANITY Season Extension Class
Thursday, November 29, 7:00–8:30pm
at Cornell Cooperative Extension, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca
Josh Dolan of Gardens 4 Humanity will lead this class covering the basic principles, techniques and technology of season extension, a crucial strategy in our northern climate.  Participants also will have an opportunity to construct a functional cold frame from local lumber.  Fee for the class is $5.  Please call Cooperative Extension at (607) 272-2292 to sign up!  Note: students may purchase a finished cold frame for $150, but will need to place an order before the class.

Evergreen Wreath-Making
Friday, November 30, 6:30-8:30pm

at Cornell Cooperative Extension, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca
Make a beautiful evergreen wreath to decorate your home for the holidays! Fresh-cut greens, ring, wires, and ribbons are supplied. Bring any special decorating materials you would like to use to personalize your wreath. Wear casual clothes and bring pruning shears and gloves. 2 DATES from which to choose! Friday's session will oriented toward those who have taken this class before, and offers less instruction. Saturday's class includes how-to instructions by Master Gardener volunteers. Nature’s Gifts for Winter Solstice

Do your own holiday shopping list while your children make unique and beautiful holiday gifts for family and friends at this Ithaca Children's Garden workshop. Bring a gift list for up to 10 people.  All materials and supplies are provided. Cider, popcorn, and ginger cookies will be served. Ages 3-15 welcome.  Self-determined sliding scale of $30-$100 - a great value no matter what you choose to pay! ICG members receive 20% off lowest price. Pre-registration required. GARDENS 4 HUMANITY Winter Gardening Network Meeting

2013 Master Composter Training
Starts February 14, 2013
Applications due: Monday, January 28, 2013        
Volunteer to help promote responsible composting in Tompkins County. Training involves 20 hours of class time covering composting in depth, and 20 hours of “practical internship”. After training, Master Composters give back to the community in a variety of outreach activities. Fee: $60 training deposit, reimbursed when volunteer work complete.
