Winter Worm Composting Class on Saturday, March 5, 10:00am-12:00 pm at
Cooperative Extension Education Center, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca NY. Learn
all you need to know to set up and maintain a worm composting bin. Every
household leaves with a starter bin and worms. Children are welcome with an

THE BUSINESS SIDE OF FARMING, Saturday , March 5, from 9am-12pm at CCE-TC, 615
Willow Ave, Ithaca. This session focuses on sharpening your business skills
from the records you need and how to use them for business analysis. We will
also share information on business services and resources available to you.
Learn about farm and crop recordkeeping systems that are on-farm tested as
well as typical analysis tools including cash flow, income statements, balance
sheets, etc. that help you know where you are and if you are making progress

Root Cellaring Basics at White Hawk Eco Village from 1-3PM. Click here for
info and to register. Root Cellars, and related storage areas, are a great way
to preserve food for the winter months. As part of White Hawk's Sustainability
Series, Greg Nelson will cover several important aspects of the process,
including what kind of spaces can be used for root cellaring and Items that
store well in root cellars.

Food Garden Panel Discussion on Wednesday, March 9, 6:30-8:30pm at Cooperative
Extension Education Center, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca NY. Don’t miss this
panel discussion by several experienced food gardeners! Master Gardeners and
others with years of food growing experience will highlight some advanced ways
to maximize your crop and extend the growing season. This workshop will assume

Tractor Workshop for Small Farms on Saturday March 12, 9:00 AM -12:00 PM at
Dryden Lawn & Recreation at 54 North Street (Route 13) Dryden, New York 13053.
Is there a tractor in your future? Small farmers and rural landowners who are
considering purchasing a tractor or who need some basic operation,
maintenance, and safety practices are invited to attend this workshop
sponsored by the Cornell Cooperative Extension SCNY Agriculture Program.
Instructors include Fred Carpenter, owner of the John Deere dealership, and
Dave Buck, Lansing farmer, who has been actively involved in teaching tractor

at the door. Dress warmly, workshop is mostly indoor in a heated garage.

Fruit Tree Pruning Workshop on Saturday March 19, 9:00 AM -12:00 PM at
Reisinger's Apple Country Orchards 2750 Apple Lane Watkins Glen, New York
14891. This fun, educational workshop is ideal for those that are new to fruit
growing as well as the seasoned fruit grower. Instructor Rick Reisinger will
demonstrate pruning techniques on apples, stone fruits, nuts and berries
throughout his family orchard. Other topics to be covered include grafting and
apple tree and renovating an older tree to improve fruit production. This is
an outdoor demonstration; participants should dress for the weather. Cider and
donuts will be provided. Preregistration is required by March 4, 2011 for
admission to either workshop. $15/person or $25/couple. Call Schuyler County

grafting with John Reynolds from Daring Drake Farm. Students will have hands
on practice doing a tongue and whip graft. Each participant will leave class

Day, on Wednesday, March 30, at the State Capitol in Albany, New York. Join
farmers, food advocates, local officials, environmentalists and other New
Yorkers to meet with legislators at the State Capitol about the critical
importance of farms and food to New York State’s economy and food security.

ServSafe Food Manager Certification Course on Tuesday April 5 and April 12,
8:30 AM -5:30 PM at CCE-Tompkins Education Center at 615 Willow Avenue,
Ithaca, New York 14850-3555. This nationally recognized and accredited food
safety training course is offered over two days and provides participants with
nationally-recognized certification in food safety. The certification is
accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-Conference for
Food Protection (CFP). Fee of $150 is due at the time of registration, and
includes textbook, all printed materials, certification exam and light
refreshments.

40th New York Wine Industry Workshop and New York Wine and Grape Foundation
Annual Seminar from April 13-15, 2011, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. at the Ramada

Workshop (WIW) is an annual technical meeting focusing on enology concepts and

Min Creasy from Thronbush Farm will present her work as an animal
rehabilitator. Min lives cooperatively with birds of prey and uses them as a
songbird deterrent in her Finger Lakes vineyard. Min's talk will be
complimented by Rose Borzik who will present a rehabilitated Red-tailed Hawk.

Compost Fair on Sunday May 1, 12:00 PM -4:00 PM at CCE-Tompkins Education
Center, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca, New York 14850. Celebrate spring's arrival
by stopping in the Compost Fair to see and experience ALL aspects of
composting. There will be food, music, interactive displays, activities for
kids and continuous tours of our composting demonstration site. Learn about
the various ways to compost and have your questions answered by Master
Composters - just in time for spring clean up and gardening! Prize drawings
will be held at 3:30pm for all attendees. The Fair will be held in
conjunction with the 4-H Rubber Duck Race & 5K Run so there will be lots of
displays and fun activities for children of all ages. Admission is free and
open to the public.

Spring Garden Fair & Plant Sale on Saturday May 14, 9:30 AM -2:30 PM CHECK
BACK FOR NEW LOCATION THIS YEAR! Cooperative Extension Master Gardener
volunteers, over 40 area growers, and other garden groups offer perennials,
specialty plants and gardening advice. You will find organically grown
vegetable transplants and heirloom varieties, a huge variety of annuals, herbs
and many specialty perennials, flowering shrubs, trees, hardy roses and fruit
crops. Free soil pH testing is available and educational exhibits and
information are offered. Kids can join the Ithaca Children's Garden for a fun
hands-on activity. Bring baskets, wagons, and other containers for

The Finger Lakes Permaculture Institute presents Mushroom Innoculation
Workshops on May 21 & 22 in the Finger Lakes region, NY at Hawk Meadow Farm
and Cayuta Sun (near Ithaca). The Finger Lakes Permaculture Institute invites
you to our workshops that introduce participants to the world of mushrooms,
their link to healthy soils and forests, and their growing potential on both a
home and commercial scale. We will inoculate shiitake, oyster, and stropharia
mushrooms and discuss how to successfully raise multiple harvests. Workshop
participants receive complete instruction and take home an inoculated log,
coffee ground substrate, and instructional booklet with further resources.
