Karl North's TCLocal series on Tompkins County food production
continues this month with Part Five, "Peri-urban Agriculture."
This installment envisions food production at the edge of the City
of Ithaca as the second of the three agroecosystems upon which we
will rely in a future of declining energy inputs (the others being
Urban and Rural).

Peri-urban agriculture features gardens that are substantially
larger than urban plots but are still located very close to the
city. This article suggests the conversion of areas adjacent to
Ithaca's inlets to a style of farming typified by super-productive
Mesoamerican chinampas and envisions a model peri-urban food
production center at the location currently occupied by Wegman's.
