I've also had success, with both undergraduate and graduate students, with
Luke Johnson's *Reading Romans.* I usually also have students read one or
two other short to medium-length commentaries, including: James Edwards
(NIBC, Hendrickson), which is quite traditional but methodical and attentive
to the history of exegesis; the abridged Fitzmyer, *Spiritual Exercises...*;
and Kaylor, *Paul's Covenant Community.* I often begin the course by
assigning Tom Wright's *What Paul Really Said* to raise basic issues and
"level the playing field."
As for assignments, I generally ask for two short exegesis papers (one on
1-8, one on 9-16) that do not require a lot of research, and a final
topical/thematic research paper or a final in-depth research exegesis paper.
