There is no reminder to the Galatians that they should be involved in the
collections yet according to 1 Cor. 16:1 Paul had already given instructions
to the Galatians prior to the writing of 1 Cor. in 53 or 54 CE. According
to Ben Witherington III, using 1 Cor. 16:1 should result in making Galatians
the earliest letter. It also changes the whole north/south argument because
it makes clear Paul had been in Galatia prior to 53 or 54 CE. In Galatians,
and this is true only in Galatians, Paul is closely associated with Barnabus
and Antioch and we know from Acts 15:36-41 Paul and Barnabus had some kind
of disagreement prior to the second missionary journey. There are other
features that only occur in Galatians, such as Paul discussing his
pre-Christian days, that suggest Galatians is the earliest letter and that
this congregation is very young at the time of the writing of this epistle.
This letter was probably written prior to the Council described in Acts 15.
So say Ben Witherington III.
