Martin's argument re Gal 4.10 (NTS 42 (1996), 105ff) is not perhaps as
persuasive as previous contributors have suggested.

He himself affirms only that the time-keeping terms in 4.10 are compatible
with either Judaism or paganism; and that 'only the context can determine
the issue'.
But in dealing with the context he dismisses altogether too casually the
link which _stoicheia_ establishes between 4.9 and 4.3 (and hence the whole
previous section). Clearly Paul is linking the proposed action (polemically
and ironically) with a return to national deities; but this seems entirely
compatible with the "traditional" view.

It is notable that Gal 4.10 lacks any explicitly cultic aspects of Jewish
time-keeping. This might reflect the cosmic side of time-keeping and the
fact that cultic practices (and certainly pilgrimmages) might either have
been down-played by the agitators or in any case be incumbent upon
circumcision in any case.
