For an extensive treatment of this theme, see the new study by Alex T.
Chung, <t>Idol Food in Corinth: Jewish Background and Pauline Legacy</>
(Sheffield, JSNT Supplement Series 176, 1999). This is a revision of
Chung's PhD dissertation at Westminster Theological Seminary. Chung
concludes:

<quote> This historical and exegetical investigation strongly challenges
the widely held view that Paul regards idol food as a matter of
indifference, to be avoided only if it causes the weak to stumble. An
alternative understanding is proposed: Paul considers conscious
consumption of idol food a denial of the Corinthians' allegiance to Christ
and urges them to avoid idol food if, and only if, it is identified as
such.</quote>

Without endorsing or challenging Chung's conclusions, I mention this
book as an excellent compilation of pertinent evidence and arguments for
those interested in more detailed study of the subject.
