I agree that using C-Paul in this manner is a great idea. I thought
of using it to such advantage last semester for my students, as well.
However, I refrained for the following reason. On this list (as with
all other such discussion lists), we have a wide range of scholarly
abilities represented; consequently, not all opinions expressed and
views presented are deserving of the same attention from readers. I am
not speaking of whether the reader agrees or disagrees with the position
being presented, but of whether certain posts or threads are grounded in
more than the writer's flights of fancy.
Usually, it doesn't take more than a couple of days for such a
thread to be snipped by a more careful poster; however, my concern was
that students would not have the critical or scholarly "equipment" to
discern whether they were spending time following a scholarly debate or
wasting time following another neophyte's ramblings. I suppose that,
ultimately, it boiled down to my reluctance to keeping up with each
thread onlist so that I could warn my students away from those which
would simply be confusing deadends.
I applaud Dr. Maclean, if she is staying on top of it all! Of
course, it may be that her students are not beginners in Pauline studies
(mine were) . . . in that case, this list is a tremendous place for her
students to "hang out."
