Call for Papers:
The Lund 2000 Conference on Rhetorical Argumentation in Biblical Texts

The Lund 2000 Conference on Rhetorical Argumentation in Biblical Texts will
be held in Lund, Sweden, July 24-27, 2000. This is the week before the
SNTS in Tel Aviv. The Lund conference is the sixth in a series of
international conferences on the general theme "Rhetorical Analysis of
Scripture," where the previous conferences have been held in Heidelberg
1992, Pretoria 1994, London 1995, Malibu 1996 and Florence 1998. It is
anticipated that Sheffield Academic Press will publish the papers from the
conference in the Journal for the Study of the New Testament Supplement
Series, where the papers from the preceding conferences can be found.

The conference will be held in the Gamla Biskopshuset, the 17'th century
former residence of the Bishop of Lund which has recently been converted
into an elegant conference center. The participants will be housed in the
Grand Hotel of Lund, within walking distance of the medieval part of town
and the Cathedral. The generous funding by the Swedish Research Council
for the Humanities will pay for the hotel and the meals during the time of
the conference for those participating.

Like the preceding conferences in this series, this conference will give
biblical scholars a chance to interact with one another in a smaller
setting. The number of participants is limited to 40, and the number of
presenters is limited to 25. Approximately 10 places are reserved for
Scandinavian participants, including doctoral students who are not
required to present papers. The papers will be available beforehand, so
that only a 15-minute summary will be needed before a 30-minute discussion
of the paper.

Rhetorical criticism is a steadily expanding field of biblical
interpretation, where interpreters use a variety of methods. The focus of
the Lund conference is "Rhetorical Argumentation in Biblical Texts," and
both ancient and modern forms of rhetorical analysis, as well as critical
assessments, are welcome. We are looking for papers that display
argumentation in Biblical texts from both testaments, either by pointing
out smaller rhetorical devices or larger rhetorical strategies. Suggested
themes would include a text's inner texture, the enthymeme, elaboration
patterns, as well as parallels to epistolographical and rhetorical
conventions in the Hellenistic world, especially the progymnasmata.

Proposals for the conference, including an abstract of 200 words, are due
Jan 15, 2000 to the organizers of the conference, Dr. Anders Eriksson or
Doc. Walter Übelacker, Department of Theology, Allhelgona Kyrkogata 8, 223
62 Lund, Sweden; or directly by e-mail to Anders.Eriksson AT teol.lu.se
