James,

I certainly agree that the idea of a chain of transmission is the
same, but my point was that 1 Cor 4 looks at the chain from the
perspective of the first two links, whereas 2 Tim 2:2 views the third
and fourth links in the chain. I understood your original post to be
drawing inferences for the common authorship of 1 Cor and 2 Tim, as
you said:

>>1 Cor and 2 Tim 'could' have been written by the same author. For
>>example, the relationship Paul-Timothy-addressees in 1 Cor 4
>>parallels Paul-Timothy-church in 1 Tim and especially 2 Tim 2:2...

But again I would say that 2 Tim 2:2, with its view of the third and
fourth links, seems to reflect a later generation.

In a similar vein, you asked in an earlier thread "Disputed Pauline
Letters" how we might pursue the question of authorship of the
Pastoral Epistles apart from the squishy criteria of language and
style and so forth. On 4-1-99 I offered a longish post in which I set
forth in some detail some considerations on the authorship of the PE
based on their general orientation toward "youthful" Christian
leaders. I would be interested to hear what you thought of my
discussion of the authorship of the PE. Did I provide a criterion
that would satisfy your question?

XPIC
