The incredible shrinking IT industry

Open Studios is into community-based recording studios. Using computers
that house Open Source applications for audio and video production,
these facilities provide access for individuals to enter the global
market place at a higher level than now available.

With some reflection, one might actually envision what you mentioned:
"But, you’re saying, what about the Next Big Thing? Won't that
reestablish IT as a stand-alone industry? No - the Next Big Thing is all
about how technology is better used and creates more value in the
context of business results. It's about IT becoming a management, not a
technical, discipline. That means how do line managers grow revenue or
profit; not about getting excited over some tarty new technology."

However, with just a little more reflection, we at Open Studios, believe
"tarty new technology" is exactly what is coming. It may not come from
IBM, or Sun, or Apple, or HP, or Cisco, or some other giant corporation,
but rather from investment in "funds" packages of individuals engaged in
creativity and innovation. Consider an investor putting money into a
firm that manages a niche devoted to inner-city development, or regional
tourism, and, within that setting, provides financial investment to grow
and nurture new ideas and technology for addressing social issues. Out
of that, will be solutions based, not on discussion and more studies
[which simply rehash what everyone is expert at], but on technological
breakthroughs made possible by giving access to individuals of the tools
needed to "discover" those breakthroughs.

The Digital Age is empowerment of the individual, as was the Gutenburg
Press an empowerment of the people, collectively. We should be
cognizant of what is happening around us, and strive to adapt, eh?
Thanks,
Tom Poe
