All,

I agree with those who have already responded, that February 10, second Friday, is the preferred date:

1.  We need to continue our goal of building up second Friday Artwalk and by adding a separate date , would we be  taking away audiences from art walk and/or adding an unnecessary burden on the businesses?  I don't think  Shimmer is big enough (yet) to warrant being a separate event to bring people out.

2.  This year on February 10, Laurie Anderson is performing at CPA at 8 pm, as part of the Philip Glass multi-day festival.  An opportunity to promote Shimmer AND Artwalk  potentially through CPA, which regularly sends out email communications to its ticket holders.  There would be quite a few people at CPA who don't ordinarily attend Artwalk. I also suspect there will be  out of towners, so this would be a chance to engage tourists.  March 3 is Steve Earle (venerable, but not as much a draw).

3.  Regarding the weather:  I agree with Laura's great ideas:  hot chocolate, warming tents  and mostly that having a festival about light during a dark and cold time of year is what makes it fun.  The technology will not be a problem if everyone is forewarned.    More volunteers, improved volunteer coordination,  and support for the artists would go a long way.  We'd need to plan for these on the 3rd in any case.

4.  If we could arrange for a bus, even  for a couple of hours , to shuttle people from E. to W. Franklin where most of Shimmer will be, I think we could further gain audience.

Please may we hear from other commissioners??

Emily

Commissioners,

It has come to my attention that the group working on Shimmer for 2017 had set a date of February 10.   Via e-mail I was in favor of a different date.  Their decision was based on  the following

1.        They want the event to coincide with a 2nd Friday art walk
2.        The 2nd Friday in March is the beginning of spring break and the student population would be missing from the  Shimmer participants

P & R staff are not in agreement with this decision for the following reasons.

1.        The cold weather created issues with some of the technology at the 2016 Shimmer event
2.       The cold may have been a deterrent for a larger audience.

P & R staff would like to recommend a March 3 date for the following reasons

1.       The weather may be warmer
2.       It does not conflict with the ACC basketball event with begins March 8
3.       While it is nice to coincide with 2nd Friday art walk,  It also might be nice to create a separate event to bring people onto the streets.
4.       Our large in-kind donation of equipment and services should enable us to make a recommendation.

I wanted to get your thoughts.  Since other partners are involved, I believe we can only recommend.  The date may still remain as set, but I wanted to keep you in the loop.   jy
