Commissioner,

Here is an update on the Old Chicago design.  Overall they were pretty receptive and accommodating to the CHPAC concerns.  Here is an update.  Although one of the requests was to see if they could reconfigure their kitchen to create interior Rosemary St. small dining room, because of the location of the building stairwell and the fire control room, and the system of venting,  they were unable to make changes to the interior kitchen space.  The did however create a year round patio seating area (with fans and heaters) on the back side of the restaurant (Rosemary St.) and create a double glass door on the Rosemary St. side that leads into restaurant, effectively making use of Rosemary St. pedestrian traffic as we and others had requested.  They abandoned the mural idea and took our advice to use frosted glass to let in light and to be able to see shadows (except in the restroom area, which still needs to be “blacked” out.   They have create a center section on Rosemary st. that will be attractively paneled (see attached plans, note: Rosemary st. double glass door is not shown in this set,  but they have agreed to it).  There will also be some seating on the Church st. side under the overhang.  They abandoned the idea of the planters on the plaza that were to separate diners from pedestrians (again shown on plans, but agreed to eliminate).  Their seating still encroaches on public space,  but it will be easily removable and they will be required to get a sidewalk dining permit from the town and will agree to remove the tables and chairs when requested to accommodate town activities.  The fire pit has been changed to something portable and moved back into private space.  This is still has to meet Town engineering and fire codes.

I am greatly appreciative of you voicing your concerns and making recommendations.  It was your comments that got CDC to revisit the design and got the restaurant to make changes that the Town and Old Chicago can live with.   Thank you.   jy
