Request for Proposals: Residency at

Project Summary 

DESCRIPTION: Chapel Hill’s Public and Cultural Arts Office seeks an artist or an artist team to lead a residency (ten sessions) for the students of Phillips Middle School during the Spring of 2014. Artists are encouraged to propose a project and/or utilize techniques that are not typically offered in a middle school art program. The final artwork produced during the residency may be temporary or more permanent in nature; may be intended as a single piece, a series, or an installation; may involve other media; and may be created for indoor or outdoor display. Interested artists and artist teams should apply for this residency as detailed in this request, and are encouraged to call the contact below to discuss their proposal ideas before the submission deadline.

ELIGIBILITY: This residency is open to all artists and artist teams aged 18 years and older who reside in Orange, Durham, Wake, Chatham or Alamance Counties. Artists should have experience working in a residency or classroom situation, and the ability to communicate with students and members of the school community. Selected artist(s) will be subject to a background check in accordance with school system policy

PROJECT BUDGET: The total budget for this residency is $4,500, including honoraria, supplies and all other expenses related to the concept, design and implementation of the project. Residency finalists will each receive a $100 honorarium for their proposal presentations.

The Town of Chapel Hill's Public and Cultural Arts Office develops and implements public art programs to increase public access to the arts, provides opportunities for local artists to display their work, and promotes public understanding and awareness of the arts.  The Office is advised by and works collaboratively with the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission, an 11-member volunteer board established in 1992 and appointed by Town Council.
