Hello All, Pasted below is a reply from Dick sent Friday morning. It
didn’t go through for some reason. -Steve Because the rationale underlying my
draft of "public art priorities" for 2008-2009 was not adequately
expained, I offer these additional thoughts in anticipation of our December 12
meeting. My first reaction to the Mayor's
invitation to comment was that, because our functional relationship with town
government will end in a few weeks, our organization wil have no town-funded
budget in 2008-2009 and thus it would srve no relevant purpose to participate
in the town's prelminary budget planning. However, upon reflection and
following my conversation with the Town Manager, my draft communication to you
was intendd to suggest the possible value of draeig on our four-year experience
as a so-called special commission of the town to offer some thoughts about
emphases the new town infrastructure might wish to consider next year. Although some--if not all--of us may
choose to accept the opportunity to serve in the first class of members of the
new town public art commission, his may be the last opportunity for our
corporationto speak with one voice abot how the town could build on the legacy
we have enerated to date. In short, this could be our corporate "swan
song" as a special commission of the town. Consistent with the approach
intended by my draft, consideration was not limited to matters on which we have
reached definitive agreement in the past. Rather, it also includes visions
about new opportunities for the future that have been the subject of our informal
discussions from time to time. An impediment to offering some such
potentially useful advice may be the limited time available, before December
15, to craft a consensus document. Alternative approaches coud be (1) a later
separate communication from us, unconstrained by the budget cycle, or (2) no
such report, with reliance instead on our membership in the new town commission
to perpetuate consideration of tomn intiatives that we individually or
colletively believe are important. In conclusion, two questions could
be on the agenda for December 12: (1) Do we wish to offer any such proposed
blueprint for the future, either now or later; and (2) if so, what
recommendations might we make. |
