I hope everyone's New Year is going well so far! January's been packed with events and this coming up week is no exception! Check it out!
MONDAY JAN 17 @ 7pm: Monthly Board Game Night!
We play old familiar games like Scrabble, Boggle, Scattergories, Risk, and any card game you can imagine, but we also play new fun underground classics like Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, Dominion, and Guillotine. Bring any game you'd like to play and there will be someone who will play with you!
Coffee, tea, and snacks will be available :)
WEDNESDAY JAN 19 @ 7pm: On the Criminalization of Dissent: Garrett Fitzgerald of the RNC 8 Speaks
Dinner catered by Vimala of Vimala's Curry Blossom Cafe!
Immediately before the 2008 Republican National Convention, police carried out dawn raids and snatched protest organizers off the street.
Eight of the arrestees, collectively known as the RNC 8, were charged under the Minnesota version of the US PATRIOT Act (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USA_PATRIOT_Act) with "conspiracy to riot in furtherance of terrorism" on account of public organizing activity. After a lengthy support campaign, the prosecutors were forced to drop the terrorism charges, eventually dismissing charges entirely against three of the defendants and accepting misdemeanor pleas with the remaining four.
Having spent two and a half years on the front lines of one of the most important civil liberties court cases in recent US history, Garrett will speak about how dissent is being criminalized in the US. Don't miss!

THURSDAY JAN 20 at 7pm: (Movie Night) Croatan Earth First! Presents "Dirty Oil"
Come to this week's Internationalist weekly movie screenings to learn about the environmentally devastating Tar Sands, brought to you by local chapter Croatan Earth First!.
Deep behind-the-scenes into the strip-mined world of Alberta, Canada, where the vast and toxic Tar Sands deposit supplies the U.S. with the majority of its oil. Through the eyes of scientists, 'big oil' officials, politicians, doctors, environmentalists, and aboriginal citizens directly impacted by 'the largest industrial project on the planet today,' the filmmakers journey to both sides of the border to see the emotional and irreversible toll this 'black gold rush' fueled by America's addiction to oil is taking on our planet.

**And a gentle reminder, if you're interested in helping plan Bob Sheldon Day 2011, please attend the planning meeting, happening TOMORROW SUNDAY JAN 16 @ 6pm at Andrea's house (send me an email for the address if you need it).**

TUESDAY JAN 25 @ 7pm: Walls, Drums and Olive Trees: Apartheid in Israel
Join us with Omer Sharir for a special discussion!
Omer has been a part of Anarchists Against the Wall for the past four years, as well as working for the Israeli Committee against House Demolitions, and participating in the Yasamba - the Jerusalem Rhythms of Resistance group. He will describe his part, and his thoughts about the part of Jewish-Israelis in general, in the current struggle against the apartheid system in Israel. The focus will be on a discussion, so be prepared to share your own wisdom and experience about privilege, paternalism and solidarity.
THURSDAY JAN 27 @ 7pm: (Movie Night) "Fourth World War"
Come out and watch the documentary "The Fourth World War," a film about the struggle of poor and working-class people all over the globe who must battle both large corporations and oppressive governments in order to survive and win basic human rights. Filmed in the streets of Mexico, Korea, Argentina, Palestine, Quebec City, and other locations all over the world, this is an emotional and very politicized look at glaring injustice and the emerging movements that seek to combat it.
THURSDAY FEB 3 @ 7pm: (QUEER Movie Night) "But I'm a Cheerleader"
A naive teenager is sent to rehab camp when her straitlaced parents and friends suspect her of being a lesbian.
TUESDAY FEB 8 @ 7pm: Monthly Craft Night! w/ Paper Art Skillshare
Come by to start, work on, or complete any craft projects you've been working on! There will also be a skill share on paper art (card or bookmark making using clippings and mod podge!)

The story of how an eccentric French shop keeper and amateur film maker attempted to locate and befriend Banksy, only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner.

The One-Year Anniversary edition! Come write birthday cards to political prisoners whose birthdays fall in the month of February!
THURDAY FEB 17 @ 7pm: (Movie Night) Croatan Earth First! Presents "Ancient Futures, Learning from Ladakh"
Ladakh, or Little Tibet, is a wildly beautiful desert land high in the western Himalayas. It is a place of few resources and an extreme climate. Yet, for more than a thousand years, it has been home to a thriving culture. The breakdown of Ladakh's culture and environment forces us to re-examine what we really mean by progress - not only in the developing parts of the world, but in the industrialized world as well.
MONDAY FEB 21: BOB SHELDON DAY 2011!
Join us for an evening full of festivities to commemorate the life of the founder of Internationalist Books, Bob Sheldon!
THURSDAY FEB 24 @ 7pm: (Movie Night) "The Take"
In suburban Buenos Aires, thirty unemployed auto-parts workers walk into their idle factory, roll out sleeping mats and refuse to leave.
All they want is to re-start the silent machines. But this simple act - The Take - has the power to turn the globalization debate on its head.
