=95 8P Chris Bryant - The 2010 Discovery Series
Middle school teacher by day, singer/songwriter by night, singer/
songwriter by night, Chris Bryant approaches varied genres and subject
matter with soulful honesty. It doesn't matter if he's singing about
love, love lost, social responsibility or having fun at a party - when
Chris sings, people listen. And when they listen, they believe him.

In 2010, Chris is playing a special series of shows at the Broad
Street Cafe. Each month, he'll play a 45-50 minute set of music from
an artist, band, or genre that's been influential or inspirational to
his musical development. He'll follow that up with a 45-50 minute set
of his own material. To find out more, visit http://discover.chrisbryantmu=
sic.com.

=95 10P Fifty Two Decibels (rock/rock/rock)
Fifty Two Decibels are an original Rock and Roll band from
Pittsylvania County Virginia. They have been described as "country
boys with a big rock sound" , "Folk Rock with a political edge" ,
"Grunge Country", "a sleazier Aerosmith" and even "a cow in heat". But
if you ask them, they will call it "Rock and Roll". We will leave it
up to you to decide.

=95 8P Katie Toupin featuring Matt Myers (blues/folk)
Katie Toupin grew up around two things: music and horses. Her father
played guitar and loved learning new music. When Katie would sing to
the Beatles or Bonnie Raitt on the radio, he=92d tell Katie, =93Don=92t be
shy. Sing loud.=94
But Katie=92s first love was riding horses, and she was good at it =96
becoming an instructor in her teens. But it was not to last.
A snowboarding accident broke her arm and ended her equestrian
career. Feeling lost, she made a mission trip to the Dominican
Republic, where, on a beach one night, as she played and sang to
herself, a group of tourists gathered around and wanted to hear more.
=93It felt like God was calling me to sing,=94 she said.
After the trip, Katie sang and played countless hours with her
father, honing her skills, preparing for what was to replace her lost
career as a horsewoman.

Matt Myers started playing guitar when he was thirteen =93to appeal to
women.=94 At first fascinated by neoclassical rock, he later became
interested in blues, listening to old recordings of Albert King and
Albert Collins.
That blues influence blossomed into a blues band with his cousins
during high school. After the band broke up (members moved away to
college) Matt enrolled in a university music program. He preferred
applying music theory to his guitar work rather than his homework, so
eventually left the program to pursue music full time.
Now, both the formal training and blues influences are evident in
Matt=92s thoughtful approach to acoustic guitar.

As soon as Katie heard Matt, she wanted to introduce him to her
father. The three met, started rehearsing, and soon were playing local
venues. When Katie=92s father felt Matt and Katie could go it alone,
they did, playing their first gig with a whopping three-song
repertoire.
Katie and Matt now write their own songs, combining their varied
talents in a unique style influenced by Stevie Ray Vaughan, Dave
Rawlings, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, the Felice Brothers, Gillian Welch,
and Neil Young.
With Katie=92s powerful vocals, Matt=92s appealing guitar work, and
their earthy, lyrical songs, Katie Toupin and Matt Myers are poised on
the cusp of a compelling career.

=95 10P Gigi Dover and The Big Love (rock/soul)
"While Americana music might be all the rage these days, that music
genre's listeners, like those of just about any other style, can spot
a poseur or impostor a mile off. It takes only about a minute into
"Love Stone," the first track on "The Avocado Sessions: This Side &
The Other," to realize that Gigi Dover is the real deal. Along with
her band, The Big Love, this Southern chanteuse delivers the goods
with a touch of influence from everyone from Bonnie Raitt to Janis
Joplin. I could recommend "The Avocado Sessions' " great background
music to play while you are otherwise involved on a Sunday afternoon,
except for the fact that when I attempted to use it for just that
purpose, I continually found myself listening intently, with whatever
other task I had been busy with long forgotten. Tracks such as
"Poppies" and "Was It Just Yesterday" will definitely stick in your
brain long after hearing them. While not every song on the CD is a
winner, Dover and multi-instrumentalist Eric Lovell get credit for
pushing the envelope as to what Americana music can be. Particularly
interesting is "A Better Place," which benefits from Lovell's
excellent sitar playing. Anyone looking for something along the lines
of Emmylou Harris or Lucinda Williams would do well to check out Gigi
Dover & The Big Love." - - Devin Grant - Charleston Scene
