Ridiculously overbooked weekend of shows here:
Thursday, April 22
Toro Y Moi (http://www.myspace.com/toroymoi)
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham
Thursday, April 22
The Light Pines (http://www.myspace.com/lightpines)
Kid Future
Tir Na Nog, Raleigh
This is part of the Local Bands, Local Beers series at Tir Na nOg. The Light Pines just spent a year or two on semi-hiatus while several of them enlisted in The Love Language -- so if you saw The Love Language anytime in 2009, you saw part of The Light Pines.
Now they've regrouped & are back to making their own music . . . and Karen Mann says they're one of her fave bands of the moment.

Thursday, April 22
Cantwell, Gomez, Jordan (http://www.cantwellgomezandjordan.com)
The Coathangers (http://www.myspace.com/fuckthecoathangers)
Local 506, Chapel Hill
Kind of a perfect combination. Cantwell Gomez & Jordan take a combined 55+ years of playing-in-rock-bands experience & build tight, intricate postpunk/skronk that can sound, to the uninitiated, like total chaos. Usually because it *is* total chaos, right up until the moment they lock back into the groove, or stop on a dime.
Atlanta's Coathangers, on the other hand, may very well be nearly as inept as their music suggests, which is part of the point (I think). Their songs are profane, at times brutal in their simplicity, and generally catchy as hell.

Easy Action (http://www.myspace.com/easyaction)
The Pinhook, Durham
Double Negative make hardcore that's so chaotic, yet so undeniably tight & powerful, that it should really probably cease to exist in a blinding matter/antimatter collision. That'd be fucking RAD.

Mount Moriah (http://www.myspace.com/mountmoriah)
Jew(s) & Catholic(s) (http://www.myspace.com/jewsandcatholics)
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham
This is a CD-release for the excellent new Jews & Catholics CD, Who Are? We Think We Are! It's a lean, edgy piece of guitar-driven indie-rock, set apart by Alanna Meltzer's upright bass & Eddie Garcia's organic-sounding drum-machine programs. (The classic loud-and-crisp Mitch Easter production job doesn't hurt either.)
Friday, April 23

Cassis Orange is the new-ish project from peripatetic UNC grad Autumn Ehinger. It's low-fi bedroom keyboard-pop with some really nice beats & textures. Here's a cool (and kinda goofy) video interview with her from WRAL's website. http://www.wral.com/entertainment/video/7341392/

Whatever Brains (http://www.myspace.com/whateverbrains)
Gross Ghost (http://www.myspace.com/grossghost)
The Alphabet
Berkeley Cafe, Raleigh
Whatever Brains have just released their third 7", and it's every bit as great as their first two. Fuzzed out to the point of total overload, it takes a few seconds before your ear catches the mighty, unstoppable pop hooks circulating down there below all the scuzz & noise.

Monday, April 26
Quasi (http://www.uprecords.com/artists/quasi/)
Let's Wrestle (http://www.myspace.com/letsfuckingwrestle)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro
The new Quasi album, American Gong, is a hugely fun record. They began life in the 90s as a keyboard/drums duo (refresher: drummer Janet Weiss was also in Sleater-Kinney), but for the past few years they've had a bassist, and singer Sam Coomes has switched between organ and Neil Young-meets-Thurston Moore electric guitar. American Gong is their first record with bassist Joanna Bolme, and it's a joyous mix of overblown dirty guitar rock, and ever so slightly more introspective psychedelia, that reminds me a bit of Flaming Lips, in a good way.
Monday, April 26
Owen Pallett (http://www.myspace.com/owenpallettmusic)
