The fourth annual Saxapahaw Oktoberfest will take place Saturday, October 24th in historic Saxapahaw. The Oktoberfest is the Fall Finale of the popular summer farmers’ market and music series.
Festivities begin at 2:00 with the dedication of Saxapahaw’s newest addition, The Saxapahaw Cultural History Museum. Local leaders and politicians will participate in a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at the Museum site to celebrate the diverse history and heritage of this historic village.
Oktoberfest festivities begin at 3:00 featuring Tommy Edwards of The Bluegrass Experience, Wood & Steel, The Kickin Grass Band and Town Mountain playing on the HayWagon Stage.
In addition to Benjamin Vineyards locally produced wines, the Saxapahaw General Store will be selling a host of different microbrews. Local farmers are setting up a special Harvest Farmers Market with delicious fresh food and organic produce and special fall treats like caramel apples, roasted chestnuts and pumpkins and local artisans will be on hand selling a variety of arts and crafts. The Barbeque Joint will have dinners on sale including vegetarian selections.
As always, the market features a vibrant area for children with Hay Wagon Rides, an art tent, face painting, activities and games including Capture the Flag, Sack Races and the newly invented Compost Catapult. Many of the Farmer’s and event staff will be in Halloween Costume. Children are invited to come dressed for Halloween and there will be a Kid’s Parade halfway through the show.
Each year this fall festival has grown. With crowds often reaching over 1,500 a week in the summer, Oktoberfest brings an even larger number of triangle and triad residents into this historic mill village aside the Haw River. The renovation and rehabilitation of the former mill buildings continues as construction is underway on a new pub and restaurant, a music and event center named The Haw River Ballroom and 26 high -green riverside condominiums in the former cotton mill’s dyehouse.
The Saxapahaw Oktoberfest is sponsored by the Saxapahaw Rivermill, the Saxapahaw General Store and The Eddy, the town’s future local pub. Additional information is available at www.rivermillvillage.com including maps, pictures and contact information for all of the farmers and bands.
