Saturday, October 3
Eugene Chadbourne (http://www.eugenechadbourne.com/)
Marsh Woodwinds, Raleigh

Greensboroian Dr. Eugene Chadbourne has been exploring the intersection of country, jazz & the avant garde for 30+ years now, via a bewildering & never-ending stream of combos large & small, and an endless series of albums, some on actual labels, and some self-released. He's a true North Carolina treasure, and the most geniusy of our state's current small crop of geniuses.

Saturday, October 3
Inflowential (http://www.myspace.com/inflowential)
The Love Language (http://www.myspace.com/thelovelanguage)
Motor Skills
Pour House, Raleigh

This is another party related to the recent local comp Hear Here, which I still haven't heard, because "here" apparently doesn't include Durham.

Saturday, October 3
The Lovely Feathers (http://www.thelovelyfeathers.com/)
The Rural Alberta Advantage (http://www.myspace.com/theraa)
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham

Saturday, October 3
Nervous But Excited (http://www.myspace.com/nervousbutexcited)
Humble Tripe (http://www.myspace.com/shawnluby)
The Pinhook, Durham

12:00 - Nervous but Excited
11:00 - Humble Tripe

Saturday, October 3
The Travesties (http://www.myspace.com/travestiesnc)
Free Electric State (http://www.myspace.com/freeelectricstate)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Free Electric State are a new/loud swirly Durham band who take a cue from UK bands like Jesus & Mary Chain. They feature former members of the Ex-Members.

The Travesties emerged from the ashes of Jett Rink, and they bring a slightly more soulful, slowed-down vibe to their old band's frantic new-wave energy.

Sunday, October 4
Veelee (http://www.myspace.com/seeveelee)
WXDU 88.7 FM, Durham

Veelee are Matt & Ginger. Matt used to be in Opening Flower Happy Bird. In Veelee, they make processed, at-times chilly pop that's at once minimalist but complex. Live, the setup is guitar, drums, keyboards & looped/sampled bass; over the radio you'll be seriously challenged to figure out how two people are playing so much stuff. 4:00 p.m. at 88.7 FM or wxdu.org.

Sunday, October 4
noman (http://www.myspace.com/nomandetroit)
Reservoir, Carrboro

Monday, October 5
Hearts and Daggers (http://www.heartsanddaggers.com/ )
Mother Jackson
Up With the Joneses
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Tuesday, October 6
Darker My Love (http://www.myspace.com/darkermylove)
All the Saints (http://www.myspace.com/allthesaints)
A Place to Bury Strangers (http://www.myspace.com/aplacetoburystrangers)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Wednesday, October 7
Bear in Heaven (http://www.myspace.com/bearinheaven)
Veelee (http://www.myspace.com/seeveelee)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Bear In Heaven recently received a huge career boost when Grizzly Bear's Ed Droste tweeted about them; you can read all about it in Grayson's article about Twitter & indie-rock in the Indy. http://www.indyweek.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A402643

Veelee are a great new local gtr/drums/keys duo whose chilly minimalist synth-pop is, on closer inspection, actually remarkably complex and warm.

Wednesday, October 7
Valient Thorr (http://www.valientthorr.com/)
Early Man (http://www.earlymanarmy.com)
White Tiger and the Bed of Roses (http://www.myspace.com/tigersandroses)
Pour House, Raleigh

Valient Thorr are international hirstute space-metal superstars, but on the few days they're at home & off the road, "home" is still the Triangle.

Thursday, October 8
Cowboy Junkies (http://www.cowboyjunkies.com/)
Lee Harvey Osmond
ArtsCenter, Carrboro

Thursday, October 8
Blag'ard (http://www.blagard.com/)
The White Cascade (http://www.myspace.com/thewhitecascade)
The Pinhook, Durham

Thursday shows at the Pinhook start at 9:00 nowadays.

10:00 - The White Cascade
9:00 - Blag'ard

Thursday, October 8
Dirty Little Heaters (http://www.myspace.com/thedirtylittleheaters)
Richard Bacchus & the Luckiest Girls (http://www.myspace.com/richardbacchus)
Tir Na Nog, Raleigh

This week's installment of Tir Na nOg's Local Bands, Local Beers night pits the boozy rock-n-roll raconteur act of Richard Bacchus against the equally boozy garage-rock megawallop of the Dirty Little Heaters. This just might be the show of the week, folks.

Thursday, October 8
Proof (http://www.prooftheband.org)
Pink Flag (http://www.myspace.com/pinkflagnc)
Revolutionary Sweethearts
Pour House, Raleigh

Pink Flag are an all-woman 3-piece punkrock band from Durham who neatly split the difference between pop- and avant-

Proof have been around for a decade, at this point; they emerged from the ashes of the Slinty mid-90s Chapel Hill band Cole, but they really came into their own a few years later, when they added singer Jeramy Lowe for a one-off Fugazi cover set for the Kings Cover-Up, and then he stuck around.

Thursday, October 8
Jordan (http://www.myspace.com/jordanmusic)
Where the Buffalo Roamed (http://www.myspace.com/wherethebuffaloroamed)
Goodbye, Titan (http://www.myspace.com/loudestsilenceever)
Reservoir, Carrboro

Friday, October 9
Blitzen Trapper (http://www.blitzentrapper.net/)
Wye Oak (http://www.myspace.com/wyeoak)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Merge artists Wye Oak are the real deal. If you've heard their records, you might've wondered if/how they pull it off live. They do, and here's how:

He plays drums one-handed, and handles all the keyboard lines with his other hand, while she sings & flat-out shreds on the guitar. Well worth seeing.

Friday, October 9
Former Ghosts (http://www.myspace.com/formerghostssleep)
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham

Former Ghosts is a collaboration between Freddy Ruppert and Jamie Stewart, aka Xiu Xiu, aka the bitterest Durham-hating Durham resident ever to blog about hating Durham while still living here.

Friday, October 9
Pink Flag (http://www.myspace.com/pinkflagnc)
Pistil (http://myspace.com/pistilband)
Broad Street Cafe, Durham

Friday, October 9

Gray Young (http://www.myspace.com/grayyoung)
Jew(s) & Catholic(s) (http://www.myspace.com/jewsandcatholics)
Dry Heathens (http://www.myspace.com/dryheathens)
Solar Powered Sun Destroyer
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Grab-bag of varied local styles, from the echo-laden shoegaze of Gray Young, to the stripped-down gtr+upright bass+beats indierock of Jews & Catholics, to the southern-Replacements pubrock of Dry Heathens. Wildcard: DC's Solar Powered Sun Destroyer.

Friday, October 9
ANTiSEEN (http://www.antiseen.com)
Kiff
Prostitute Hostage (http://www.myspace.com/prostitutehostage)
Berkeley Cafe, Raleigh

ANTiSEEN have been purveying their unique brand of Southern scum-punk since the mid-80s, and while they've slowed down the frequency of their shows somewhat since their nonstop heyday, when they *do* play, it's as scary as ever.

Friday, October 9
Billy Sugarfix (http://www.soundclick.com/bands/8/billysugarfix.htm)
Knock Out Roses
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Billy Sugarfix's debut solo album, Summer Tempests, might come as a surprise to those who still think of him as that guy doing the John Philip Sousa covers on his Theremin. The album is a richly-arranged, impossibly sad song-cycle about [not] getting over a breakup, and the quirky level of detail & specificity to the songs just adds to the pathos.

Saturday, October 10

This is a CD-release party for the new I Was Totally Destroying It album, Horror Vacui. Also on the bill: a cross-section of the area's best bands, including the Dylan-meets-Pavement indierock of Lonnie Walker and the awesome-in-any-form des_ark.

Bright Young Things
Holy Liars
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Sunday, October 11
Tin Star (http://www.myspace.com/tinstarnc)
WXDU 88.7 FM, Durham

Tin Star are a supergroup of sorts, with Jamie Miyares (ex-tommygun), Louis Botta (ex-William Christ Supercarr) and Bart Moyers (Bringerer, ex-William Christ Supercarr) forming the core. Their songs are fueled by the tension between Jamie's piano & her high delicate voice, and Louis's shrill, distorted guitar lines, which weave in & out between the other instruments.

Show gets underway at 4:00 p.m. at 88.7 FM or wxdu.org.

Sunday, October 11
Phosphorescent
Alberta Cross (http://www.myspace.com/albertacross)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Monday, October 12
TV Ghost (http://www.myspace.com/televisionghost)
Wizzard Sleeve (http://www.myspace.com/wizzardsleeve)
Harlem (http://www.myspace.com/harlemduh)
The Pinhook, Durham

WXDU DJ Craig Powell, fresh off the rousing success of last week's house show featuring Thomas Function, has this to say about this show:

TV GHOST - play dark, damaged garage punk and have a badass new LP on In The Red. "Lafayette, Indiana creepers TV Ghost incorporate the licentious nuances of the earliest Cramps scuzz, No Wave cacophony and Suicide's terrifying throb alongside cavernous bellows from the depths of the third layer of hell." http://www.myspace.com/televisionghost

HARLEM - are on tour from Austin, TX. They play catchy, Nuggets-style garage and were just signed to Matador Records after releasing a super-catchy debut LP "Free Drugs" and subsequently earning rave reviews for said LP as well as their live show (two frontmen trading off guitar/drums = high energy!) They play songs about girls, drugs and "Psychedelic Tits." Plus, they have a Triangle connection - Jose grew up in Chapel Hill and played in Spider Bags before moving to Austin. http://myspace.com/harlemduh

WIZZARD SLEEVE - I know it's cheesy to say, but maybe these guys defy description... Alabaman glue-wave? Or you could just come to the show and then decide for yourself....Their new LP on HoZac is being called "a skin-crawling, death-punk masterpiece" and I've heard that their frontman, Captain Beyonce, is one of the weirdest/coolest... http://myspace.com/wizzardsleeve

Monday, October 12
Anti-Pop Consortium (http://www.wordsound.com/antipop.html)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Tuesday, October 13
Spider Bags (http://www.myspace.com/spiderbags)
Pinche Gringo (http://www.myspace.com/pinchegringoband)
Harlem (http://www.myspace.com/harlemduh)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

If you couldn't make it to Monday's show at the Pinhook (or if you did, and didn't get enough), here's another chance to take a gander at Austin's Harlem, along with two of NC's finest garage-rockers, Spider Bags & Pinche Gringo.

Tuesday, October 13
Drink Up Buttercup (http://www.myspace.com/drinkupbuttercupband)
The Uglysuit (http://www.myspace.com/theuglysuit)
