Tuesday April 21
=95 8:30P High Strung Music's Old Time Jam w/ Aaron Greenhood
Old-time music is a form of North American folk music, with roots in
the folk musics of many countries, including England, Scotland,
Ireland and Africa. This musical form developed along with various
North American folk dances, such as square dance, buck dance, and
clogging. The genre also encompasses ballads and other types of folk
songs. It is played on acoustic instruments, generally centering on a
combination of fiddle and plucked string instruments (most often the
guitar and banjo).

Wednesday April 22
=95 7P Open Mic Night
Open Mic is arranged to enable anyone to perform, so all you have to
do is turn up early and get your name down to perform. Originals and
cover music of every style and genre are welcome! Open mic is a great
way to practice your art and can also can be a proving ground for new
talent and material. The audience consists of singers, poets,
songwriters and music lovers so the atmosphere should be warm and
encouraging for everybody.

Thursday April 23
=95 8P Trees Leave (americana/folk rock/indie)
Letting go, or running from the past is the prominent theme of the
songs that decorate =93Run,=94 the debut album of Trees Leave. The ghosts
that haunt this Nashville, Tennessee alternative-folk-rock duo have
been coming back to life in their songs for years. Trees Leave have
been playing music together for close to a decade. The last couple of
years, though, have been the most productive and satisfying for them.
They have crafted a sound that marries their Bluegrass roots with
their love of Rock, Blues and Traditional Country music. Trees Leave=92s
preferred brand of Americana mixes raw, emotional lyrics with equally
jarring melodies and instrumentation. Whether they are plugged in or
sitting on the back porch, the urgency in their music and performance
is hard to ignore.
Usually performing as a duo, they share rhythm guitar duties when
the other is impressing on their signature instruments. Cobi
Ferguson=92s polarizing guitar riffs and Wyatt Espalin=92s fiery fiddle
solos add spice to their live performances and keeps audiences
guessing what will come next. When the venue suits it, Trees Leave
performs with a backing band and their songs do not hesitate to meet
them at the next level. The listener is caught off guard with the
twists of irony, winks of wit and sighs of sorrow of the characters in
their songs.
=95 10P Short Wave Society (indie/experimental)
Shortwave Society fuses elements from orchestral and electronic
soundscapes to create a unique accompaniment to their off-kilter pop
songs. Violin, cello, and a sea of vocals weave intricate tapestries
while guitar and pianos pulse, and electronic bleeps and blips fill
every nook and cranny of your subconscious. These ladies and gents
host a post-modern sojourn through jazz, pop, and chamber music
traditions; equally at home in the dance club or the concert hall
alike.

Friday April 24
=95 8P Windy City Slim & The Sunnyland Rhythm Kings (urban ballads/
ragtime/hokum/blues)
A singer in the old-time tradition, Windy City Slim plays acoustic
guitar, slide guitar, and harmonica, and has a repertoire of songs
dating from the 1890s to the 1990s. For this, his first appearance in
Durham, Slim will be performing a relaxed program of urban ballads,
ragtime, hokum, and blues=97with emphasis on the blues. He=92ll be
supported by three veteran Triangle musicians: Doctor Tim Smith on
keyboard, Ken Yow on electric bass, and the irrepressible Ed Butler on
drums.
=95 10P Lakenau and Joe
Some people can sing and then there are folks like Crystal who can
really sing! Born and raised in North Carolina, Crystal found her
voice at early age singing in church. Nina Simone meets gospel &
blues. Bo Lankenau has lived in and played music in San Francisco,
D.C. and Dallas. Bo has created a style all his own by playing
exclusively in altered tunings, with an emphasis on complex
fingerstyle rhythms.

Saturday April 25
=95 8PThe Bumsrush (folk rock/funk/psychobilly)
Ever feel like you've been "bumrushed"? Come hear what it's all about.
"WOW" has a whole new meaning. Featuring Post Postlethwait (drums),
Will Postlewait (bass), and John Garris (guitar).
"In the search for perfection one must seek those of like minds. This
is just what we tried to do with Bumsrush. Even though our backgrounds
may differ, we have made this our strength. When performing, a
musician may find themselves playing music that seems to have created
itself. We are a part of something bigger than ourselves." -Will
Postlethwait
=95 10P Open Mic and Beat Battle hosted by SoSeriousEntertainment - $5

If you are in any way a fan of jazz, this is not to be missed !!!
Aaron Mills, best known as the audacious bassist of classic funk act
Cameo, has inspired a generation of groovy musicians, but his long
time love affair with jazz has inspired The Aaron Mills Project.
Aaron has been playing at the Cafe for a few months now, along with
Wayne Kee, Bobby Hinton, Warren Fraizer and others. Aaron has brought
Sunday night jazz back to the Cafe in a format that includes a cast of
regulars as well as featured guest musicians every week. Towards the
end of the evening, the night becomes an open jam, so, if anyone wants
to come blow their horn....
