=95 8P The Whiteouts
In the beginning, there was...The Inkspots. Sure, there were gospel
quartets before them, but for pure "secular" music, the Inkspots mark
the beginning of time for later Doo Wop, Soul, Rhythm and Blues, and
even Rap music. This 1930's vocal group pretty much wrote the book on
popular vocal quartet music for the next 40 years. Their voices were
instantly recognizable, and from the first note of the guitar you knew
exactly...who they were...what they were going to sound like...where
they were going with it...and how enjoyable the ride was going to be.

Many decades later=85 a couple of tall, middle-aged, white guys crossed
paths in New Jersey, at one of those newfangled, 21st-century Ukulele
festivals. Joel Eckhaus, a native of exotic White Plains NY,
discovered the ukulele back in the '70's, through the recordings of
Cliff Edwards (aka Ukulele Ike). He was fortunate to study the uke
with Roy Smeck, vaudeville's great "Wizard of the Strings". Canadian,
Ralph Shaw, grew up in jolly olde England, and first heard the uke,
from the British Music hall and film comedian George Formby, at a
young and impressionable age.

These two guys became friends and went on with their respective
"careers" in life and music, until the rest of the world re-discovered
the ukulele, and they found themselves in demand as teachers and
performers at those previously mentioned Ukulele Festivals. Ralph, a
"professional busker", singer, songwriter, "dance genius" and
impresario, is a "sensitive" banjo uke player, with a soaring tenor
voice, and an unrestrained theatrical flair. The audience can't help
but get a bit excited with his sometimes "frenzied" and often
"suggestive" gyrations (see his version of Viva Las Vegas). Joel, a
mild-mannered luthier, is often more droll in his presentation and
specializes in singing classic jazz tunes, old rock 'n roll hits, and
popular standards, with original and usually "scandalous" lyrics.
(Check out his version of "Cheek to Cheek").

Among the many things they have in common, Joel and Ralph discovered a
mutual appreciation for the music of the Inkspots. Late one night,
while singing "I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire", they discovered
that two guys and a uke could cover the bare essentials of an Inkspots
song. By the next evening they had learned "We Three", and armed with
a repertoire of two songs, they unleashed their efforts upon the
unsuspecting audience at the Portland Uke Fest. The enthusiastic
response was downright encouraging, and the WhiteOuts were born.

Though they live on opposite sides of the continent, in two different
countries, and only get together at uke festivals, the WhiteOuts have
managed to learn at least four or five Inkspots songs. Fortunately,
they can fill the rest of the evening with songs and surprises from
their vast repertoire of Vaudeville and Music Hall favorites, George
Formby novelties, Roy Smeck originals, "permanently ruined" standards,
and vintage "uke-abilly" music, delivered with sparkling originality
and a healthy dose of thigh-slapping, gut-busting, eye-watering
comedy.

the audience is in for a musical treat. Listening to the band's
rendition of James Browns' "Poppa's Got a Brand New Bag" or Willie
Nelsons' "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" will make you ask, "Where has
Bobby been hiding all of our lives"? It's clear that Bobby is no
stranger to performing. Bobby Hinton and his band enjoy playing the
music which their audiences request. According to Bobby: "I realize
that people come out for different reasons. Some are in love, some are

regulars as well as featured guest musicians every week. Towards the
