Wednesday Mar 4
=95 7P Continuum Blues Jam
Come out to the Blues Jam every other Wednesday sponsored by Continuum
Consulting Services. Butch Haas will be facilitating this free-to-the-
public jam. So bring your gear, sign up for a time, and jam with some
of Durham=92s finest! Drums, keyboard, bass, guitar and harp amps
provided.

Thursday Mar 5
=95 8P Putnam Smith & Vanessa Torres (folk/roots)
Putnam: Foot-stompin' banjo, melancholy guitar, spicy mandolin, and
"A Sexy Voice!" (Karen Frangoulis, WERU) are the tools of the trade,
for this Portland-based singer/songwriter.
With the 'modern roots' sound of Iron and Wine and the performance
energy of a one-man Old Crow Medicine Show, Putnam puts on a show that
makes people want to do a little
knee-slappin' one moment, then curl up all intimate-like with a glass
of red wine, the next.
Vanessa: Inspiring, tender and passionate, Torres=92 songs and
performance are soulful personal portraits rooted in universal themes
of compassion and hope. It is her unique blend of authenticity and
grace that makes Torres' music both refreshing and inspiring. Torres'
songs draw you in by being both catchy and lyrically moving.
=95 10P Please Welcome (rock/jam band/folk) - $5 cover
The band could be considered Jammy jazz-rock with a hint of folk and
has a wide spectrum of influences ranging from Dave Matthews Band,
Phish, John Mayer, Allman Brothers to Neil Young, Bela Fleck and the
Flecktones, Led Zeppelin, Darth Vader and maybe even Indiana Jones.
The name Please Welcome was originally a joke between long time band
mates, guitarist and singer Craig Williamson and drummer Justin
Richardson. The joke-name existed so that venues could hypothetically
state, =93Please Welcome, Please Welcome=94. The name seemed unique enough
and the idea stuck. Within the last few months, Please Welcome has
added long time friends and new faces such as Brandon Clendenin on
bass, Adam Hill on saxophone, Katie Garrett on backup vocals and piano
and Casey Markham on lead electric guitar and mandolin.

Friday Mar 6
=95 8P Ken Larson Trio (light jazz)
The KLT consists of Ken Larson on guitar, Lex Larson on bass and Todd
Gambling percussion/vocals. KTL focuses on mid-20th century
traditional Jazz.
=95 10P The Inner City Surfers (indie/rock)
There are 4 of us and we are strong and good looking ..we have
instruments .. some of us have guitars and some of us have drums and
basses .. most of us have mics ..there is also enuff mental problems
and insanity to legally declare the INNER CITY SURFERS HQ a mental
institution ..after our meds we get to go to the "room WITH
electricity" and plug in all the instruments we have stolen from
people over the years and ROCK. I know you want to love it and you can
touch it if you want ..we are the INNER CITY SURFERS!

Saturday Mar 7
=95 8P Rhymes with Opera (experimental/classical opera) and AM/PM
Saxophone Quartet
Rhymes With Opera, a new opera company "dedicated to bringing new
opera into unconventional spaces," returns to Durham to present a
program of new chamber music and opera at the Broad Street Caf=E9, on
Saturday, March 7th at 8pm.

RWO will be presenting two world premieres of works written
specifically for the AM/PM Saxophone Quartet and members of Rhymes
With Opera. Thomas Limbert's Numbers/Dates (Anxiety Leading to Panic)
uses voice samples from University of Pennsylvania's research on
"emotional prosody," creating and interweaving natural speech in
different emotional states with singers and saxophones. In Skeleton, a
new opera by Thimble Wit, Ruby Fulton and George Lam, three strangers
meet by chance on a train, where one of them begins to tell the story
of a betrayed lover and his disturbing revenge.

In addition, RWO teams up with Baltimore-based AM/PM Saxophone
Quartet, featuring performances of new music for saxophone quartet by
composers Mattias Sk=F6ld, as well as Duke University graduate
composition students George Lam and Kathleen Bader. AM/PM is comprised
of saxophonists from the Peabody Conservatory of Music, and will be
featured this season at the Look & Listen Festival (New York, NY) and
at the 32nd International Saxophone Symposium (Fairfax, VA).

RWO's new production in Durham is a part of the company's 2009 east
coast tour, which brings them to venues in Durham, Baltimore,
Philadelphia and New York City. The Durham performance will take place
on March 7th at 8pm, at the Broad Street Caf=E9 (1116 Broad Street).
Free Admission. For more information, please visit Rhymes With Opera's
website, at http://www.rhymeswithopera.org.

Sunday Mar 8
=95 7P Jazz Jam at The Broad St. Cafe w/ Aaron Mills
As the audacious bassist of classic funk act Cameo, Aaron Mills has
inspired a generation of groovy musicians - some of whom he now works
with (OutKast, Gwen Stafani, Cee-Lo). Aaron has been playing at the
Cafe for a few months now along with Wayne Kee, Bobby Hinton, and
others. Aaron is bringing Sunday jazz back to the Cafe in a format
that includes a cast of regulars as well as featured guest musicians
every week. If you are in any way a fan of jazz, this is not to be
missed.
