1) "AID AND ABET" GRASSROOTS MEDIA TOUR!

On Thursday, October 2nd at 7 PM, join radical media activists from
around the country at the Internationalist for an exciting and
informative multimedia presentation about resistance across the globe!

The 2008 Grassroots Media Tour is sponsored by radical and independent
media projects from around the US, including Bitch Magazine, $pread
Magazine, Left Turn Magazine, ColorLines Magazine, Free Speech Radio
News, and Make/Shift Magazine. The tour has two primary functions;
First, to get information out ? to communicate about current struggles
for justice and liberation, from criminal justice organizing in Jena
to sex worker activism, from resistance to imperialism in Iraq and
Latin America to resistance to school privatization, from immigration
rights movements to post-Katrina organizing in public housing. Second,
the tour also seeks to connect communities of resistance, and to build
relationships between grassroots activists and independent media.

Tour presenters Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Puck Lo, and Jen Angel come from
many movements and backgrounds, but all of them are grassroots media
makers. The evening's program will include everything from spoken word
to music to video to multimedia presentations to personal stories,
delivered by three members of the tour, plus one local performer or
speaker, each for about 20 minutes. The event will then conclude with
Q&A, ways to get involved, calls to action, and/or announcements about
how to connect with local campaigns.

For more information on the tour and bios of the presenters, please
visit www.aidandabet.org/grassrootsmedia.

FRI, 10/3, 7 PM: ANTI-MOUNTAIN TOP REMOVAL FILM SCREENING
More information coming soon!

WED, 10/8, 7 PM: REPORTBACK FROM THE RNC/DNC PROTESTS!
Don't miss a thrilling evening of stories from the tear gas and pepper
spray as Triangle activists discuss their experiences protesting the
Republican and Democratic National Conventions!

Local radicals will explain their motivations for attending the
protests in Denver and St. Paul and describe the process of local and
national organizing that mobilized networks of resistance across the
country to participate. Participants will retrace the trajectory of
events during the protests including marches, blockades, and direct
actions, while showing maps of the protest zones and narrating
individual experiences. Local independent media filmmakers will be on
hand to show first hand footage shot during the RNC along with other
videos and photos from both convention protests. We'll explore the
militarization of policing, and how the PATRIOT Act and terrorism
scare tactics are used to repress social movements.

After the presentation, we'll discuss how to build momentum for local
resistance in the Triangle area as well as upcoming mobilizations
including demonstrations at the presidential inauguration. Also,
there will be opportunities to support the legal defense of hundreds
of protesters arrested unjustly on trumped up charges. Come connect
with supporters of grassroots movements for liberation beyond the
confines of the two-party framework!

FRI 10/10, 8 PM: CD RELEASE CONCERT: GARY KOONCE AND WILL RIDENOUR
Join us for a night of beautiful music with two exciting local
musicians! Gary Koonce (http://www.reverbnation.com/gary) is a
classically trained singer and songwriter currently based in the
Greensboro area, whose uplifting and melodic guitar tunes place him
head and shoulders above the standard for acoustic singer-songwriters.
He will be performing songs from his self-released full length CD,
which will be available for sale. Will Ridenour
(http://www.myspace.com/zumana) performs traditional songs and
original compositions on the kora, a 21-stringed West African bridge
harp. His musical goal is "to bring the beautiful instrument, the
music, and the culture behind it to the ears and souls that seek it,
for whatever reason, learning and growing along the way." Don't miss
this riveting evening with two of the area's most innovative acoustic
musicians!

THURS 10/16, 7:30 PM: "CARBON FREE HOME" AUTHOR READING!
You probably know that energy used in your home produces more
global-warming pollution than your car, but what can you do to reduce
your reliance on fossil fuels? Maybe you daydream of starting from
scratch, building a new, super-efficient, passive-solar, off-grid
house?but in reality you?ve got a roof (and a mortgage) over your head
already. How can you turn your existing house into an environmental
asset? One that simultaneously saves you money on utilities and
insulates you from the possible shocks of Peak Oil?

Meant as a guide for renovating existing homes, The Carbon-Free Home
gives you the hands-on knowledge necessary to kick the fossil-fuel
habit, with projects small and large listed by skill, time, cost, and
energy saved. For every aspect of your life currently powered by
fossil fuels, The Carbon-Free Home offers alternatives you can
accomplish yourself to get started using renewable and sustainable
sources of power. Having weaned themselves completely from fossil
fuels in their conventional 1930s urban house, Rebekah and Stephen
Hren provide a map for others to do the same. Their book shows first
how to reduce energy consumption, then to retrofit existing homes to
obtain all heating, cooling, cooking, refrigeration, hot water, and
electricity from renewable sources. The Hrens also provide advice on
renewable methods of transportation and home gardening. These
practical approaches fit anyone?s budget and can be implemented over
time to progressively liberate a home from fossil-fuel dependency.

Authors Stephen and Rebekah Hren live in Durham, North Carolina, where
they are both actively involved with renewable energy, natural
building, and edible urban gardening. Rebekah works with Honey
Electric Solar, Inc., as a professional designer/installer of
photovoltaic systems and domestic solar hot-water systems. Stephen is
a professional restoration carpenter, focusing on antebellum houses.
He teaches natural-building classes and workshops at the local
community college, and in any spare time works with Bountiful
Backyards, an edible-landscaping cooperative.

MON 10/20, 7:00 PM: ROLLING THUNDER #6 RELEASE PARTY!
Come to the release party for the sixth issue of locally produced
anarchist magazine Rolling Thunder! Contributors and editors involved
in the magazine will be on hand to present on some of the themes of
the issue, talk about the process of compiling the magazine, and
discuss the current state of direct action movements in the US. THERE
WILL ALSO BE SNACKS AND SMALL TALK! The new issue features an
analysis of new models developed by animal rights activists to target
abusive corporations, a photoessay documenting the construction of an
autonomous social center in Sweden, a discussion of the role of proper
support structures in communities of resistance, and the tale of
Mikhail Bakunin's daring escape from exile in Siberia, among other
things.

WED 10/29, 7 PM: JEFFERY BEAM READS FROM "BEAUTIFUL TENDONS:
UNCOLLECTED QUEER POEMS, 1969-2007"
Renowned poet and Hillsborough resident Jeffery Beam will bring his
latest collection of riveting, passionate poems to Internationalist
Books! The Beautiful Tendons: Uncollected Queer Poems 1969-2007
brings together more than three decades of lyrical, metaphysical Gay
poetry from native North Carolinian Jeffery Beam. The vast majority of
these poems are unpublished in any of his previously published books,

magazines & anthologies of the latter half of the 20th century.

alternatives to the prison system, while meeting a direct and urgent
need. There are many ways to get involved:

every Sunday from 1-4 PM at 218 N. Graham St. in Chapel Hill.

NEW LOCAL SKILLSHARE / FREE SKOOL!

Do you like to make stuff, learn things, and teach others? A local
Skillshare/DIY/Art Collective, Free Skool, Radical Event Bulletin, and
Space/Material/Tool Share is being formed. This is a way for local
creative types to find each other to make and do stuff together. There
are a lot of innovative, skilled, and imaginative people in this area.
Let's pool our knowledge, skills, and resources to exponentialize our
creative input and output. So if you want to make masks or soap or
vegan liqueurs or a rope ladder or a mud oven or collaged formal wear
or tamales or hula hoops or pretty much anything else, or find others
to play soccer or practice tai chi with, or host a workshop on blowing
glass or screen-printing, or organize a potluck or salon, or just put
out an idea to the community; check this thing out. This is a way to
get your desires out of your head and into the awareness of lots of
other like-minded local people. Let's get together for the artistic
and practical. This is completely non-commercial and local. The
website is http://people.tribe.net/papokha. (Please email
papokha AT gmail.com to make postings or with any questions.)
