Saturday, August 16
The Sugar
Sadlack's Heroes, Raleigh

Saturday, August 16
Thad Cockrell (http://www.thadcockrell.com/)
Pour House, Raleigh

I read somewhere the other day (probably in N&O writer David Menconi's blog) that Thad Cockrell has moved back from Nashville. You can ask him yourself at this early (7:30?ish) show, with his full band.

Saturday, August 16
The Never (http://www.trekkyrecords.com/never.html)
Un Deux Trois (http://www.undeuxtroisband.com/)
Cary Ann Hearst (http://www.caryannhearst.com)
ArtsCenter, Carrboro

Saturday, August 16
Melvins (http://www.melvins.com)
Double Negative (http://www.myspace.com/thedoublenegative)
Big Business (http://www.bigbigbusiness.com)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Double Negative drummer Brian Walsby is good friends with the Melvins; he has been for years, and as I write this he's actually on the road with them, hauling gear & selling merch. Which helps to explain why the Melvins, reigning kings of lower-and-slower sludge, have asked Double Negative, current NC kings of louder/faster, to open this show.

Saturday, August 16
Straight 8s (http://www.straight8s.com)
Jem Crossland & the Hypertonics (http://www.jemandtonics.com)
Berkeley Cafe, Raleigh

Saturday, August 16
Veronique Diabolique (http://www.veroniquediabolique.com/)
Veronica Blood (http://www.myspace.com/veronicablood)
Broad Street Cafe, Durham

Post-makeover, there's now never any cover charge at the Broad St. Cafe.

If you were thinking that Veronica Blood must be Veronique Diabolique's identical American cousin, you were, sadly, mistaken.

Saturday, August 16
Killer Filler (http://www.myspace.com/killerfiller)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Sunday, August 17
Fin Fang Foom (http://www.lovitt.com/artists/finfangfoom.html)
Cantwell, Gomez, Jordan (http://www.cantwellgomezandjordan.com)
Polvo (http://www.southern.com/southern/band/POLVO/index.html)
Double Negative (http://www.myspace.com/thedoublenegative)
Magic Babies (http://www.myspace.com/themagicbabies)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

This is a benefit for our friend Cy Rawls. Even if you don't know Cy, the fact that five of the best bands around (including one of the greatest NC bands of all time, Polvo) stepped up to play this benefit should tell you all you need to know.

If you didn't see Polvo's reunion show in May, let me just tell you: amazing. Everything you'd hoped it would be.

6:30-7:30 The Cartridge Family
8:00-9:00 Violet Vector and the Lovely Lovelies
9:30-10:45 Birds of Avalon

Thursday, August 21
Savage Knights (http://www.retroactivedynamics.com)
Future Kings of Nowhere (http://www.thefuturekings.net/)
CCB Plaza (aka The Bull's Balls), Durham

These Thursday-afternoon shows at the CCB Plaza get started early, like around 5:30. Savage Knights are a Raleigh band who're equally at home covering the Melvins, and Ethiopian jazzman Mulatu Astatke. Future Kings of Nowhere are an acoustic pop-punk band from Durham, whose fans are tied with Red Collar's for the title of most-fanatic.

Thursday, August 21
Regina Hexaphone (http://www.reginahexaphone.com)
Schooner (http://www.schoonermusic.com)
Tir Na Nog, Raleigh

Regina Hexaphone & Schooner have been saving gas lately by touring together, and now they bring their tour all the way down I-40 to Raleigh.

Thursday, August 21
Oneida (http://www.enemyhogs.com)
The Tiny Meteors (http://www.myspace.com/thetinymeteors)
Bolmongani (http://www.myspace.com/bolmongani)
Dirty Faces (http://www.myspace.com/dirtyfacesrockband)
The Werehouse, Winston-Salem

In case you're gonna be busy on Friday night, and thus might miss Oneida at the Local 506, you can head to Winston-Salem tonight instead.

Thursday, August 21
Pariah Beat (http://www.myspace.com/pariahbeat)
Teh Vodak (http://www.reverbnation.com/vodak)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Thursday, August 21
Colossus (http://www.myspace.com/thecolossuswillcrushyou)
Grappling Hook (http://www.myspace.com/torchmaraudersgrapplinghook)
Tooth (http://www.myspace.com/toothrocks)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Anybody who witnessed Cy's star turn as Glenn Danzig at the Kings Cover-Up a few years ago knows how much Rawls loves metal. Tonight metal returns the love; you've got NWOBHM lovers Colossus, avant-garde space-metallers Grappling Hook, and the finest metal band in the Triangle, Tooth, all playing to benefit Cy Rawls.

Thursday, August 21
The Trousers
Red Collar (http://www.myspace.com/redcollarmusic)
Pour House, Raleigh

Friday, August 22
The Ghost of Saturday Nite (http://www.myspace.com/theghostofsaturdaynite)
Black River
Greg Rice
Sadlack's Heroes, Raleigh

Friday, August 22
The Ex-Monkeys (http://www.myspace.com/theexmonkeys)
Dollface (http://www.reverbnation.com/dollface)
Pizza Palace, Durham

The Ex-Monkeys are 2/3rds of the '90s-era live trip-hop band Friend Side Monkey.

Friday, August 22
The Gates of Beauty (http://www.myspace.com/gatesofbeauty)
The Scott Waite Debacle (http://myspace.com/scottwaiteisbenevolent)
Cairo
Clawform
Bull City Headquarters, Durham

Anne Gomez outlined this show thusly:

The Gates of Beauty is me on bass, Wendy Spitzer (Lemming Malloy, Felix Obelix) on bass and Shannon Morrow (Scene of the Crime Rovers, Mahasamatman) on drums and occasional keyboard. We all 'sing,' sometimes simultaneously. We would like to think we sound something like the Ruins and the Slits having a drunken tea party, but that might be setting the bar a little too high.

The Debacle is a punk/prog trio headed by Seattle import Scott Waite [Rob and Eleni of Beloved Binge have been on a mission to move their friends here from Seattle after Beloved Binge relocated here a few years ago; they were successful with Scott, to our benefit]. The Debacle is definitely a 'punk rock' band, but it's got a King Crimson/Return to Forever/Mahavishnu Orchestra vibe going on that will satisfy your hidden love of jazz fusion. And I kinda hear a little Steely Dan in there too. How can you go wrong?

Cairo is a band containing another of Rob and Eleni's recent transplants from Seattle. I don't know what Cairo sounds like, but I'm hoping for some mixture of Beloved Binge and The Debacle, with a little Mudhoney and Stone Temple Pilots thrown in for good measure. I hear Eleni might be playing drums.

Clawform is Colin Booy's solo metal banjo project - not to be missed. And maybe, if we're lucky, he'll wear his hot pants. In fact, I'm making a special request.

Friday, August 22
International Grapevine (http://www.myspace.com/theinternationalgrapevine)
Blanket Truth
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Friday, August 22
Oneida (http://www.enemyhogs.com)
Bolmongani (http://www.myspace.com/bolmongani)
Dirty Faces (http://www.myspace.com/dirtyfacesrockband)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Oneida are still the masters of Brooklyn freakout organ-drone spazzrock.

Saturday, August 23
Cantwell, Gomez, Jordan (http://www.cantwellgomezandjordan.com)
Maple Stave (http://www.maplestave.com)
Red Collar (http://www.myspace.com/redcollarmusic)
Bull City Headquarters, Durham

It says on the calendar that this is a Maple Stave CD-release show, but I swear it's only been maybe a year since the last Maple Stave EP, and I kinda thought they were on the 3-year plan. EP or not, these are three of the best bands in Durham, and all three are totally in their element onstage.

Saturday, August 23
Arrogance (http://www.arrogance.us/)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

This is billed as "an evening with," complete with both an acoustic and an electric set.

Saturday, August 23
Blag'ard (http://www.blagard.com/)
Hate Prose (http://www.myspace.com/hateprose)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Saturday, August 23
Love As Laughter
Oxford Collapse (http://www.oxfordcollapse.com/)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Saturday, August 23

Violet Vector and the Lovely Lovelies (http://www.myspace.com/violetvectorandthelovelylovelies)
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

This is a benefit for Cy Rawls, with the Badfingery Britrock of the Magic Babies and the wall-o-girl-group sound of Violet Vector & the Lovely Lovelies.

Monday, August 25
A/V Geeks (http://www.avgeeks.com)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

The name of this show is "S is for Sissies," and it's also a benefit for Cy Rawls.

Monday, August 25
Blood Red River (http://www.myspace.com/bloodredriver)
The Howlies (http://www.myspace.com/thehowlies)
The Barberries (http://www.myspace.com/thebarberries)
