1) LYLE ESTILL AUTHOR READING- "SMALL IS POSSIBLE"!

Forget homeland security- let's create hometown security!

Find out how at Internationalist Books and Community Center on
Thursday, July 31st at 7 PM, as we welcome author and activist Lyle
Estill for a reading from his new book, "Small Is Possible." This
passionate, insightful book introduces us to "hometown security," with
this chronicle of a community-powered response to resource depletion
in a fickle global economy. True stories, springing from the soils of
Chatham County, North Carolina, offer a positive counter balance to
the bleakness of our age. This is the story of how one small southern
US town found actual solutions to actual problems. Unwilling to rely
on government and wary of large corporations, these residents
discovered it is possible for a community to feed itself, fuel itself,
heal itself and govern itself.

"Think self-reliance is far-fetched in a flat world? Lyle Estill's
Small is Possible shows how it is being done for food, housing,
energy, finance, health care, and just about everything else
communities care about. A seasoned entrepreneur and social innovator,
Estill tells fun-to-read stories that are engaging, insightful, and
practical. His book is an indispensable resource for community
organizers and economic developers alike."
-Michael Shuman, author of "The Small Mart Revolution: How Local
Businesses are Beating the Global Competition"

Local resident Lyle Estill is the author of numerous articles, essays,
and blog entries, including the book, Biodiesel Power; the Passion,
People and Politics of the Next Renewable Fuel. He serves as
vice-president of Piedmont Biofuels in Pittsboro, NC.

THURS, 7/31, 7 PM: LYLE ESTILL READS FROM "SMALL IS POSSIBLE"
See description above!

SUN 8/10, 4 PM: "THE PSYCHOLOGY OF FASCISM"- TALK W/ BILL MANSON
What drives leaders such as George Bush and John McCain towards their
destructive militarism and repressive global and domestic policies? In
this provocative talk and discussion, Manson will analyze the
authoritarian narcissism underlying US corporate and political power
through the lens of psychology. Deriving insight from diverse thinkers
including Sigmund Freud, Wilhelm Reich, Erich Fromm, and others,
participants will examine the role of sexual repression, authoritarian
conditioning, and pathological narcissism in shaping the psychology of
America's leaders as the country edges towards fascism. Come prepared
to learn, debate, and explore humanistic alternatives to the
"wargasmic" policies of Republican (and Democratic) narcissists!

William Manson is a Chapel Hill-based radical intellectual historian
and author who has published essays examining fascist psychology,
authoritarian narcissism, and radical humanism in Fifth Estate
magazine, Anarchy! A Journal of Desire Armed, and more.

FRI 8/22, 7:30 PM: ACOUSTIC CONCERT / SHORT FILM / IWW FUNDRAISER!
Join us at Internationalist Books for a rousing night of union songs,
impassioned discussion, learning about the International Workers of
the World, and raising money in solidarity with IWW activists!

On August 11th, 2007, a peaceful march in solidarity with immigrant
workers facing miserable conditions organized by the Providence, RI
chapter of International Workers of the World (IWW) was brutally
attacked by police. Two IWW members, Alexandra Svoboda and Jason
Friedmutter, were arrested simply for participating, and Svoboda
suffered severe injuries to her knee and leg during the unreasonable
arrest. Now, almost a year later, the two activists still face legal
charges while Svoboda has accumulated over $100,000 of medical bills.
Activists around the country are mobilizing to raise awareness about
the injustice and to raise money towards their legal and medical
costs. Here in Chapel Hill, you can get involved at this exciting
event at the Internationalist!

The evening will feature radical acoustic union songs from local
musician Dan Mac, followed by a short film about the IWW and
information about radical union struggles as well as the demonstration
and police brutality. We'll pass the hat to help support our comrades
in Rhode Island while we plan strategies to pressure the Providence
police to drop all charges and pay restitution for their
life-threatening aggression. Don't miss this opportunity to support
the interlocking struggles for justice against immigrant exploitation,
crackdown on unions, police brutality!

SAT 8/23, 2 PM: CHILDREN?S AUTHOR READING WITH STEPHEN RABURN:
"ISOBEL AND HER DAD TAKE A TRIP TO THE MOON"
Join us at Internationalist Books for a fun-filled, all-ages afternoon
with local author Stephen Raburn, as he reads from his new children's
book, "Isobel and Her Dad Take a Trip to the Moon." A young girl and
her father decide to spice up the summer a little by embarking on a
great adventure - a trip to the moon. After building a rocket ship and
surviving a wrong turn that almost leads the pair to Mars instead,
Isobel and her dad arrive on the moon, where Isobel meets a young moon
girl named Maya. The two become fast friends, as Maya shows Isobel all
around the moon, making stops at the Luna Moth Museum and the Moon Pie
Factory, playing hide and seek in the craters, and explore Mons
Huygens (the highest point on the moon). After a day filled with fun
and thrills and newfound friendship the two little girls must say
goodbye. Isobel and Maya promise that they'll write to each other and
that someday, Maya will visit Isobel at her home in North Carolina.

Durham resident Stephen Raburn's background and training is in the
field of child psychology. He is known as a zealous advocate for the
rights and needs of children and has spent most of his adulthood
leading child-serving nonprofit organizations. Along the way, he has
written dozens of articles (most of which have a more serious tone
than this book) that have appeared in newspapers, magazines and
professional journals. This is his first children's book. Proceeds
from the sale of the book will be donated to children's charities.

NEW LOCAL SKILLSHARE / FREE SKOOL!

Do you like to make stuff, learn things, and teach others? A local
Skillshare/DIY/Art Collective, Free Skool, Radical Event Bulletin, and
Space/Material/Tool Share is being formed. This is a way for local
creative types to find each other to make and do stuff together. There
are a lot of innovative, skilled, and imaginative people in this area.
Let's pool our knowledge, skills, and resources to exponentialize our
creative input and output. So if you want to make masks or soap or
vegan liqueurs or a rope ladder or a mud oven or collaged formal wear
or tamales or hula hoops or pretty much anything else, or find others
to play soccer or practice tai chi with, or host a workshop on blowing
glass or screen-printing, or organize a potluck or salon, or just put
out an idea to the community; check this thing out. This is a way to
get your desires out of your head and into the awareness of lots of
other like-minded local people. Let's get together for the artistic
and practical. This is completely non-commercial and local. The
website is http://people.tribe.net/papokha. (Please email
papokha AT gmail.com to make postings or with any questions.)
