Friday, February 29
Transportation (http://www.myspace.com/transportation)
Bringerer (http://www.myspace.com/bringerer)
Caltrop (http://www.myspace.com/caltropband)
Blag'ard (http://www.blagard.com/)
Hazerai (http://www.myspace.com/hazerai)
Track and Field Studios, Carrboro

This is a benefit/closing party for Track & Field Studios, the rehearsal-space/recording studio that was founded by ex-Go employees Nick Peterson & Ben Dunlap when Go closed. Now Track & Field too is closing, victim of increasing rents.

Since many of your favorite local releases of the past 3 years were recorded there (seriously! read the liner notes!), it only stands to reason that many of yr favorite bands are coming together for a 2-day celebration/wake/benefit. Show starts at 8:00.

Friday, February 29
The Whigs (http://www.thewhigs.com)
Spinto Band (http://www.spintoband.com/)
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham

Friday, February 29
Wood Ear (http://www.myspace.com/woodear)
Bull City Headquarters, Durham

If you're a devoted follower of the underground Greensboro <-> Durham musical axis, then you're already down with Wood Ear, which is the new-ish project of Nate Tarr, ex-Dirty Version/Killing Frost.

Friday, February 29
Sedona (http://www.sedonarock.com/)
Annuals (http://www.myspace.com/annuals)
Lonnie Walker (http://www.myspace.com/lonniewalker)
The Brewery, Raleigh

Friday, February 29
Wil Donegan and the Apologies
Paper Cuts (http://www.myspace.com/thepapercuts)
Beach House (http://www.myspace.com/beachhousemusic)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Friday, February 29
The Sibling Project (http://www.thesiblingproject.com/)
Cool Ethan (http://www.myspace.com/coolethanrock)
Hey Euphony (http://www.myspace.com/heyeuphony)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Friday, February 29
Ruscha (http://www.myspace.com/ruscha)
Black Skies (http://blackskies.us/)
All the Saints (http://www.myspace.com/allthesaints)
Hell, Chapel Hill

It does seem somehow apropos to celebrate Leap Day with a massive slab of heaviosity.

Friday, February 29
Dirty Little Heaters (http://www.thedirtylittleheaters.com)
Tooth (http://www.myspace.com/toothrocks)
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Somewhat improbable lineup, sure . . . Dirty Little Heaters, despite their evolution into a power trio, are still a fairly straightforward/stripped-down blues-garage-rock band. Whereas Tooth are the best metal band in North Carolina, and they've got the burly beards & full-stacks to prove it.

Nevertheless, the show actually makes perfect sense, as there are still some folks in Raleigh who don't give Durham no respect, and this show packs more than enough firepower to pummel those folks into submission.

Saturday, March 1
Black Taj (http://www.amishrecords.com/ami021.html)
Monsonia (http://www.monsonia.com)
In the Year of the Pig (http://www.southernloveprod.com/ityotp.htm)
The Curtains of Night (http://myspace.com/thecurtainsofnight)
Bastard Sword
Track and Field Studios, Carrboro

This is a benefit/closing party for Track & Field Studios, the rehearsal-space/recording studio that was founded by ex-Go employees Nick Peterson & Ben Dunlap when Go closed. Now Track & Field too is closing, victim of increasing rents.

Since many of your favorite local releases of the past 3 years were recorded there (seriously! read the liner notes!), it only stands to reason that many of yr favorite bands are coming together for a 2-day celebration/wake/benefit. Show starts at 8:00.

Saturday, March 1
Tom Maxwell (http://www.tommaxwell.com)
Snuzz (http://www.snuzz.com/)
Opening Flower Happy Bird (http://www.myspace.com/openingflowerhappybird)
Dirty Little Heaters (http://www.thedirtylittleheaters.com)
Midtown Dickens (http://www.myspace.com/midtowndickens)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

This is a benefit for Tom Maxwell's son Esten, who was diagnosed with leukemia when he was 3. The lineup:

Jimmy Magoo
Baron Von Rumblebuss and Redd Zeppelin
Old 86
Buddha Cat
Velvet
The Allen Boys
Dirty Little Heaters
Opening Flower Happy Bird
Midtown Dickens
Snuzz
Tom Maxwell

Saturday, March 1
Vincent Black Shadow (http://www.myspace.com/vbskicksoutthejams)
Grass Widow (http://www.myspace.com/grasswidow)
Bull City Headquarters, Durham

Saturday, March 1
Kerbloki (http://www.kerbloki.com/)
Hundred Air (http://www.myspace.com/hundredair)
Auxes (http://www.myspace.com/auxes)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Auxes are the newish Chapel Hill supergroup assembled by Dave Laney (Milemarker, Griver). Kerbloki are the long-running Beastie-esque party-hip-hop band who just happen to have a rhythm section assembled from members of some of the finest metal & punk bands in town.

Hundred Air are the country/folk/rock-ish outfit fronted by Adam Price (ex-Mayflies USA). If you liked the Cub Country lineup with Jeff Clarke on Tele & backing vocals, you'll love this (and not just because it too features Jeff).

Saturday, March 1
Reid Johnson
Simple (http://www.myspace.com/httpwwwmyspacecomsimple)
The Band Next Door
The Cave, Chapel Hill

This is a CD-release party for the new Simple CD, Songs From a Broken Hip. The Band Next Door includes current/former members of Pleasant, Betty & the Boys, Schooner & Spider Bags.

Saturday, March 1
Beat the Devil (http://www.beatthedevil.com)
Americans in France (http://www.myspace.com/americansinfrance)
Hell, Chapel Hill

Sunday, March 2
Kingsbury Manx (http://www.thekingsburymanx.com/)
WXDU 88.7 FM, Durham

The Kingsbury Manx are rumbling back into motion, after some child-rearing-related downtime. They've got a new album on the verge of release, and they've worked up an acoustic set that, based on current evidence, should more than make up for violating my longstanding rule against acoustic sets.

Tune in & find out: 4:00 p.m. 88.7 FM or wxdu.org.

Monday, March 3
Matt Pond PA (http://www.mattpondpa.com/)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Monday, March 3
Beloved Binge (http://www.myspace.com/belovedbinge)
Eberhardt (http://www.myspace.com/eberhardtnc)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Beloved Binge are on their way home from a few days touring round the southeast, playing shows & promoting their decadent vegan lifestyle via documentary film & copious bloggery.

I'm told Eberhardt have a new, radically different lineup & mission.

Monday, March 3
The Curtains of Night (http://myspace.com/thecurtainsofnight)
Puddin' Tang (http://www.myspace.com/puddintangtime)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Curtains of Night spit great shards of drum/guitar mayhem into the sky.

Tuesday, March 4
The English Beat (http://www.myspace.com/officialbeatspace)
RX Bandits (http://www.rxbandits.com/)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Otherwise known as Dave Wakeling and a bunch of other people who weren't in the English Beat the first time around.

Tuesday, March 4
Dr. Dog (http://www.drdogmusic.com/)
A. A. Bondy (http://www.myspace.com/aabondy)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Tuesday, March 4
The Physics of Meaning (http://www.thephysicsofmeaning.com/)
The Tiny Meteors (http://www.myspace.com/thetinymeteors)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Tiny Meteors is the latest Winston-Salem band to feature the musical stylings of Kemp Stroble (ex-All Astronauts, ex-Malabaster). And that's all I know about 'em. Physics of Meaning you know about, I reckon: Daniel Hart on violin, and a rotating cast of extras (including the occasional string section) fleshing out the rest.

Wednesday, March 5
Sweater Weather (http://www.sweater-weather.com)
Auxiliary House (http://www.trekkyrecords.com/auxhouse.html)
These United States (http://www.theseunitedstates.net)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Auxiliary House are the house-band of Trekky Records, meaning their lineup is elastic, ever-growing and prone to fits of singing in unison and other similar ecstatic chaos.

Sweater Weather put out a crazy-intense CD last year, Now Everyone Can Sing, all about the stress of coming-of-age and reconciling one's belief in God with the adult realization that the world is fucked-up, or at least parts of it are. It's also all about some nine-minute songs that go from atmospheric furniture-scraping noise to all-out wall-of-choral majesty.

Wednesday, March 5
Parts and Labor (http://www.partsandlabor.net/)
In the Year of the Pig (http://www.southernloveprod.com/ityotp.htm)
Ecstatic Sunshine (http://www.ecstaticsunshine.com)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

It's SXSW season, which means all yr favorite north/eastern touring bands are going to be passing through town on their way to Texas.

In The Year of the Pig aren't passing through; they live here, in a tiny burrow down along the banks of the creek.

Thursday, March 6
Say Hi To Your Mom (http://www.sayhitoyourmom.com/)
The Big Sleep (http://thebigsleep.net/)
The Nothing Noise (http://www.myspace.com/thenothingnoise)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Thursday, March 6
Jesse Malin (http://www.jessemalin.com/)
Richard Bacchus (http://www.richardbacchus.com/)
De Novo Daho
Blend, Chapel Hill

The rumor 'round town was that Blend had closed down, but as of this afternoon, this show (presented by the Cradle) was still on the Cradle website, as well as Richard Bacchus's MySpace page. Call ahead, I guess.

Both Jesse Malin and Richard Bacchus were in the '90s NYC Heartbreakers-influenced punkrock band D-Generation. Richard lives in Raleigh now.

Friday, March 7
Chatham County Line (http://www.chathamcountyline.com/)
Everybodyfields (http://www.theeverybodyfields.com/)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

This is a Chatham County Line CD-release party.

Friday, March 7
Mowgli (http://www.myspace.com/mowglimowgli)
Audrey Ryan (http://www.myspace.com/audreyryan)
Hell, Chapel Hill

Friday, March 7
Hammer No More the Fingers (http://www.hnmtf.com)
Born Ruffians (http://www.bornruffians.com)
Cadence Weapon (http://www.myspace.com/cadenceweapon)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Can random MP3 blogs across the USA generate enough heat to alter the arc of HNMTF's career? That is to say, everybody who hears 'em seems to instantly like 'em, and thanks to Teh Internets (and a few strategic freely-available mp3s), now everybody can hear 'em.

Friday, March 7
Gray Young (http://www.myspace.com/grayyoung)
Citified (http://www.citifiedband.org/)
Tin Star
Jack Sprat Cafe, Chapel Hill

Friday, March 7
Microkingdom (http://www.myspace.com/microkingdom)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Saturday, March 8
Kenny Roby (http://www.kennyroby.com)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Saturday, March 8
The Ex-Members (http://www.myspace.com/theexmembers)
Men (http://www.myspace.com/mrandmrsmen)
Hey Willpower (http://www.myspace.com/heywillpower)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Men would appear to include the 2/3rds of Le Tigre that aren't Kathleen Hanna (JD Samson & Johanna Fateman, that is).

Saturday, March 8
A is Jump (http://www.myspace.com/aisjump2)
The Binary Marketing Show (http://www.myspace.com/thebinarymarketingshow)
The Swimmers
The Stationary Set
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Saturday, March 8
The Apes (http://www.selfstarterfoundation.com/apes.html)
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Sunday, March 9
The Gay Blades (http://www.myspace.com/gayblades)
Phoebe's Carousel (http://www.myspace.com/phoebescarousel)
johnnydirtyshoes (http://www.myspace.com/johnnydirtyshoes)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Monday, March 10
Reid Johnson
Jen Richelson (http://www.myspace.com/jenrichelson)
Ponieheart (http://www.myspace.com/ponieheart)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

The Cave's website says this begins at 8:00. Reid Johnson fronts Schooner.

Monday, March 10
Ten Penny
Lonesome Departed
Local 506, Chapel Hill

This is a Local 506 Free For All (free admission over 21).

Tuesday, March 11
Alias Smith & Jones (http://www.myspace.com/aliassmithandjonesband)
Spindale
Local 506, Chapel Hill

This is another 506 Free For All. Alias Smith & Jones contain half of the core lineup of the great early-90s Raleigh rockband Vanilla Trainwreck, plus Danny Kurtz (ex-Backsliders) and a guy named Isaac Lake.

Tuesday, March 11
Hazerai (http://www.myspace.com/hazerai)
Sightings (http://www.myspace.com/sightings)
Bells
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

I'm down with this return to single-word bandnames. Less typing.
