Kenny Roby's Mercy Filter (http://www.kennyroby.com)
The Houstons
Tony Tidwell (http://www.myspace.com/tonytidwell)
Pour House, Raleigh
Kenny Roby & Tony Tidwell both grew up in/around Clemson, South Carolina. Kenny moved to Raleigh after high school; Tony didn't. They both wound up making intelligent roots-rock that draws as much from Springsteen, Costello and/or New Orleans as from the redneck south of their youth.
Friday, September 28
Recess (http://www.dyss.net/nightlight/)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill
Company Night Edition - Bringing it back for the faithful, Company Night is a free-form collaboration with randomly selected local performers improvising together ad hoc. Brilliant or disgusting results are par for the course with this kind of risk-taking, inspired in this case by the improv tactics of Mr. Derek Bailey. Crowmeat Bob curates / conducts / plays reeds and guitar / emits rays of spiritual guidance. Performers include: Chris Eubank (cello), David Morris (tuba), Christopher Thurston (double bass), Shannon Morrow (percussion), Jenks Miller (percussion), Craig Hilton (laptop/guitar), Steve Burnett (electronics).
Friday, September 28
The Antagonizers (http://www.antagonizers.com/)
Motorbilly (http://www.myspace.com/motorbilly)
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh
This is a night-before pre-party for the annual Vendettas auto show.
Friday, September 28
Michael Holland (http://www.bigjohnsrecords.com)
New Town Drunks (http://www.newtowndrunks.com/)
Everybodyfields (http://www.theeverybodyfields.com/)
Local 506, Chapel Hill
Michael Holland used to be in Jennyanykind with his brother Mark. Lately he's been making a weird hybrid of bluegrass and demented stoner blues with the excellent Chapel Hill bluegrass band Big Fat Gap.
New Town Drunks arrived here from Texas a couple of years ago, and immediately found a new second home at The Cave. They write scabrous country-rock songs about being fucked up.
Saturday, September 29
Straight 8s (http://www.straight8s.com)
Hearts and Daggers (http://www.heartsanddaggers.com/ )
Killer Filler (http://www.myspace.com/killerfiller)
Blood Red River (http://www.myspace.com/bloodredriver)
Flat Tires
Hideaway BBQ, Raleigh
This show is part of the 4th-annual Vendettas Car Show, which used to be held in the parking lot across from Kings. The Hideaway is an ideal new location for an all-day rockabilly auto show, since they're equipped not just with parking & a stage, but also an ample supply of BBQ and cheap beer.
Saturday, September 29
Dexter Romweber (http://www.dexterromweber.com)
Sadlack's Heroes, Raleigh
Dexter Romweber has been playing his own personal blend of rockabilly, blues, 50s rock-and-roll and garage since he was a teenager in the early 80s. For many of those years he was the front half of Flat Duo Jets. Nowadays he plays solo, or in a duo with his sister Sara (Let's Active, Snatches of Pink) on drums. He is a true North Carolina treasure.
Saturday, September 29
$2 Pistols (http://www.myspace.com/twodollarpistols)
Tres Chicas (http://www.treschicas.org/)
Great Big Gone (http://www.greatbiggone.com)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro
This is a 10th-anniversary celebration/pre-party for the Carrboro Music Festival, which will make its 10th appearance all over Carrboro tomorrow, Sunday 9/30.
Two Dollar Pistols have a new album out, 'Here Tomorrow, Gone Today,' which may well be their best yet.
I've loved Lynn Blakey (Glory Fountain) and Caitlin Cary (Whiskeytown) of Tres Chicas for way too long to be making "Back Porch Music" cracks, and anyway, I'll bet (or hope, anyway) that NPR listeners make for generally respectful and responsive audiences, which is what their gorgeous music deserves.
Saturday, September 29
Ben Davis + The Jetts (http://www.lovitt.com/artists/bendavis.html)
Red Collar (http://www.myspace.com/redcollarmusic)
The Nothing Noise (http://www.myspace.com/thenothingnoise)
Local 506, Chapel Hill
This show is presented by Diversions, the weekly arts-and-entertainment section of the Daily Tar Heel. They've been doing a bang-up job of covering the local music scene for the past year or so, and it's great to see them extending that relationship further with a series of collaborative shows with Local 506.
Dunno whether their endorsement is enough to reverse the undergraduate trend of apathy towards live music, but bless 'em for trying.
They've picked some good bands for it, too: both Ben Davis and Red Collar make indie-rock that's passionate, complex *and* catchy.
Sunday, September 30
Carrboro Music Festival (http://carrboromusicfestival.com/)
nearly everywhere, Carrboro
This is the 10th annual Carrboro Music Festival, the open-to-all-bands festival that puts 100+ bands on stages all over Carrboro, all day long. As in years past, it's sort of an alternate- [to my-] universe music festival: There are probably 100 Triangle bands whom I feature on trianglerock.com semi-regularly, and about 5 of them are playing the Carrboro Music Festival.
Sunday, September 30

Wednesday, October 3
Dexter Romweber (http://www.dexterromweber.com)
Michael Rank (http://www.sleazegrinder.com/teensleazehanoi.htm)
Colourslide
Pour House, Raleigh
This is going to be one of those Dexter Romweber Duo shows, with sister Sara Romweber on drums. I've seen Dex play in all kinds of outfits--Flat Duo Jets, solo, with his large band the New Romans--and I have to say, these shows with Sara are the best I've ever seen.
Wednesday, October 3
Dawn Chorus (http://www.myspace.com/dawnchorus)
*SONS (http://www.myspace.com/sonsofthesun)
Adam Franklin (http://www.myspace.com/toshackhighway)
Local 506, Chapel Hill
Adam Franklin was in Swervedriver. If he's back on the overdrive/shoegaze tip, then *SONS are a good match; they've got the Echoplex and the CryBaby wired up in some kind of endless loop.

Filthybird (http://www.myspace.com/filthybird)
Pneurotics (http://www.myspace.com/pneurotics)
Stalking Horses
Bull City Headquarters, Durham
Last week I was having dinner with friends, and racking my brain trying to think of recent local releases that had totally made my year; Filthybird's debut, "Southern Skies," was the CD that most immediately sprang to mind. It'll wind up on my 10-best list come January, and yours too, if'n you go see them between now and then.
Friday, October 5
Nathan Asher & the Infantry (http://www.nathanasher.com/)
Red Collar (http://www.myspace.com/redcollarmusic)
The Brooks Wood Band
Lincoln Theater, Raleigh
Good lord, two of the local masters of wordy anthemic fist-pumping inspirational bar-rock, Nathan Asher & Red Collar, together on one bill?
Friday, October 5
Savage Knights (http://www.retroactivedynamics.com)
Wanko Honcho (http://www.myspace.com/havingarager)
Count Ejacula
Nightlight, Chapel Hill
Savage Knights are a jazz/funk/rock combo--one of Crowmeat Bob's many & varied entanglements--equally at home covering Ethiopian jazzman Mulatu Astatke and the Melvins.
Friday, October 5
Patty Hurst Shifter (http://www.pattyhurstshifter.com)
Regina Hexaphone (http://www.reginahexaphone.com)
Anders Parker
Pour House, Raleigh
Anders Parker is/was the core member of a band called Varnaline. He lived in Raleigh for a while, before moving on, but he's stayed close to Regina Hexaphone's Sara Bell, and played on RH's brand new album, "Into Your Sleeping Heart."
Friday, October 5
Mobius Band (http://www.mobiusband.com/)
Opening Flower Happy Bird (http://www.myspace.com/openingflowerhappybird)
Matthew Dear's Big Hands (http://www.myspace.com/matthewdear)
Local 506, Chapel Hill
Saturday, October 6
Sorry About Dresden (http://www.sorryaboutdresden.com)
Red Collar (http://www.myspace.com/redcollarmusic)
Auxiliary House (http://www.trekkyrecords.com/auxhouse.html)
Hammer No More the Fingers (http://www.hnmtf.com)
I Was Totally Destroying It (http://www.reverbnation.com/iwastotallydestroyingit)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro
This is a CD-release party for I Was Totally Destroying It, which is a sort of altrock/emo/pop band fronted by ex-Strunken White bassist John Booker, and driven from behind the drumkit by Sorry About Dresden drummer James Hepler. Hepler won't stand for anybody putting "ex-" in front of Sorry About Dresden, and to drive his point home, they've resurrected themselves yet again to play one of their annual gigs.
The other bands on the lineup make this a sort of late-2007 check-in to the state of indie-rock in the Triangle, so treat it as a much-needed $5 refresher course.
Saturday, October 6
Sedona (http://www.sedonarock.com/)
Future Islands (http://www.myspace.com/futureislands)
Lonnie Walker (http://www.myspace.com/lonniewalker)
Downtown Event Center, Raleigh
If the presence of the pre-Annuals-fame Raleigh band Sedona on this bill isn't enough of a tipoff, I'll just say it: it's another Annuals "secret" show.
Saturday, October 6
Reid Johnson
Filthybird (http://www.myspace.com/filthybird)
Simple (http://www.myspace.com/httpwwwmyspacecomsimple)
The Cave, Chapel Hill
Reid Johnson is the singer/songwriter mastermind behind Schooner. Filthybird, as I've mentioned previously, are one of the best things about 2007.
Saturday, October 6
Ear Pwr (http://www.myspace.com/earpwr)
The Ex-Members (http://www.myspace.com/theexmembers)
Nose Bleed Island (http://myspace.com/nosebleedisland)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill
Saturday, October 6
The Loners (http://www.demonbeachrecords.com/loners.html)
Hey Neighbor
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh
Loners are the best damn gtr/drums garage-rock duo in Raleigh.
Sunday, October 7
Erie Choir (http://www.eriechoir.com)
The Good Life (http://www.betterlookingrecords.com/goodlife.htm)
Luke Temple (http://www.myspace.com/luketemple)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro
Erie Choir drew outstanding reviews for their last Cradle show; here's what Dan Bryk had to say:
"Amen! to Erie Choir. They were _so_ on, I really hope they can afford to play some out-of-town shows with that line up because (especially with "Jon Grives") they really brought their shit TO LIFE last night. The horn section reminded of the T.K.O. Horns/Dexy's Mk. II for some reason, but that was just icing -- EC were clearly so rehearsed, so at ease that they just nailed everything. Holy shit, Bob Wall is my new guitar hero."
Sunday, October 7
Brunettes ( http://www.lilchiefrecords.com/brunettes/)
Ferraby Lionheart (http://ferrabylionheart.com)
Local 506, Chapel Hill
