KAELIN RECOMMENDS "A PUBLIC SPACE": Named ?Best New Literary Magazine? by the Village Voice in 2006, A Public Space is the offshoot of the consistently prestigious Paris Review. Despite its relative youth, A Public Space has managed to attract a fantastically talented and diverse group of literary voices, including Charles D?Ambrosio, Daniel Alarcón, Marilynne Robinson, and even Haruki Murakami. Not surprising perhaps, given its contributors, A Public Space runs a gamut of moods and forms, ranging from more focused pieces centered on each issue?s national focus, to experimental, oddly resonant flash fiction. Often playful and always willing to take risks, A Public Space establishes a
fresh and refreshing venue for showcasing some of today?s most fearless literature. Issue No. 3 features a fantastic new piece by Anne Carson (?Zeus Bits,? p. 72), a short graphic essay by Nora Krug based on the life of a Japanese soldier (?Never Give Up!? p. 66), and several interviews, essays, and pieces of fiction focused on contemporary issues in Peru. While this issue's piece by Billy Collins is more than slightly out of place (Don't we read too much from him everywhere else?), A Public Space is off to a very promising
start, and is definitely worth a look.
