Friday, August 17
Cantwell, Gomez, Jordan (http://www.cantwellgomezandjordan.com)
Maple Stave (http://www.maplestave.com)
Hi-Red Center (http://www.hiredcenter.com/)
They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (http://www.theyshoothorses.org)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

The Maple Stave return to the stage for the first time in a while; they sound like what you'd expect a moshpit to sound like, if all you had was a silent video of it.

Friday, August 17
Red Collar (http://www.myspace.com/redcollarmusic)
The Vinyl Strangers (http://myspace.com/Thevinylstrangers)
Death Becomes Even The Maiden (http://www.myspace.com/dbetm)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Friday, August 17
Dexter Romweber and the New Romans (http://www.myspace.com/dexterromweber)
Firecracker Jazz Band (http://www.myspace.com/firecrackerjazz)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

The New Romans are Dexter's large band, with multiple guitars, keyboards, horns & percussion. Every song's just as amazing as you'd imagine it would be.

Friday, August 17
Filthybird (http://www.myspace.com/filthybird)
Noncanon (http://www.myspace.com/noncanon)
Downtown Event Center, Raleigh

Don't know how the great Greensboro band Filthybird got booked into the nearly-moribund Downtown Event Center (formerly the Martin St. Music Hall) in Raleigh, but if you're a Raleighite, don't miss this show. Filthybird are amazing, due largely to frontwoman Renee Mendoza's strong, supple voice, her electric piano, and their interplay with Brian Haran's guitar.

Also on the bill: the haunting gtr/drums/[sometimes bass] Raleigh space/blooz/freakout band Noncanon.

Friday, August 17
The Dynamite Brothers (http://www.dynamitebrothers.com/)
Gold Streets
Man in Gray
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Saturday, August 18
The Physics of Meaning (http://www.thephysicsofmeaning.com/)
Buried Beds (http://www.buriedbeds.com/)
Bull City Headquarters, Durham

Saturday, August 18
Annuals (http://www.myspace.com/annuals)
The Never (http://www.trekkyrecords.com/never.html)
Auxiliary House (http://www.trekkyrecords.com/auxhouse.html)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

If you weren't paying attention, you might've missed the handover to this, the next generation of Triangle indie-rock bands. They're all more-or-less in their college years, and they favor huge melodies & equally huge bands, with everybody onstage singing and playing whatever's close-at-hand. When it's on, it's euphoric; when it's not, it's at least amusingly confusing.

Saturday, August 18
Lud (http://www.ludland.com/)
Twilighter (http://twilighter.net/)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

When Lud are in their fully ramped-up show-playing mode, they're the best band in Chapel Hill. Kirk Ross's weary-but-optimistic lyrics & occasionally anthemic songwriting is perfectly augmented by the soaring guitar work of Bryon Settle, and everything's nailed down tight by Lee Waters on drums. These guys have been around long enough to be through with playing from the baser emotions; they play when they want to, because they love it.

Saturday, August 18
Filthybird (http://www.myspace.com/filthybird)
Savage Knights (http://www.retroactivedynamics.com)
Darkmeat / Vomit Lasers Family Band (http://www.myspace.com/darkmeats)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Crazed huge-band psychedelia/performance art from Athens' Dark Meat (including folks who used to be in Greensboro bands like Disband), plus the drop-dead-gorgeous Greensboro band Filthybird.

Also on the bill: Savage Knights, a gtr(s)/bass/drums/sax(es) band with Crowmeat Bob & some of his Raleigh compatriots. They're equally at home covering the Ethiopian jazzman Mulatu Astatke or The Melvins.

Saturday, August 18
Kapow! Music (http://kapowmusic.net)
Nathan Oliver (http://www.nathan-oliver.com)
The Private Sea (http://www.myspace.com/theprivatesea)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Reclusive dental student/indie-rocker Nathan Oliver emerges from hiding to play this show with the equally reclusive Bu Hanan band Kapow! Music.

Saturday, August 18
The Cartridge Family (http://www.cartridge-family.com/)
The Crap Rock All-Stars
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Sunday, August 19
Jaguar Club (http://www.jaguarclubofnyc.net)
The Manics (http://www.myspace.com/themanicsrock)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Sunday, August 19
Cinemechanica (http://www.cinemechanica.com/)
The Octopus Project (http://www.theoctopusproject.com/)
Opening Flower Happy Bird (http://www.myspace.com/openingflowerhappybird)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Opening Flower Happy Bird make laptop-pop that's lately growing colder & more clinical, at least on CD. They used to be practically low-fi in their love for fuxxy guitar and sloppy live drums, but lately everything's pristine, except maybe their high, wispy boychild vocals. The old model was goofy, kinda Sebadoh-inspired boy-pop; the new model is our eventual capitulation to the machine.

Sunday, August 19
Thunderlip (http://www.thunderlip.com/)
Barbarella (www.myspace.com/barbarellach)
Reservoir, Carrboro

Tuesday, August 21
Adrian Belew (http://www.adrianbelew.net)
Saul Zonana (http://www.saulzonana.com)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Tuesday, August 21
The Gates of Beauty (http://www.myspace.com/gatesofbeauty)
Zdrastvootie (http://www.myspace.com/zdrastvootie)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Zdrastvootie are from Portland, and though I feel like I've been seeing the name for years, I got nothing. Gates of Beauty are from Durham, and they dominate that city's all-woman bass/bass/drums trio scene.

Tuesday, August 21
Un Deux Trois (http://www.undeuxtroisband.com/)
Papercuts (http://www.myspace.com/papercutsmusic)
The Ladybug Transistor (http://www.theladybugtransistor.com/)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Un Deux Trois released the windows-down hit of the summer with "45 RPM" from their Lovers EP; since it's apparently gonna be 100 degrees daily until the end of time, it's definitely not too late to get in on it.

Tuesday, August 21
Blood Red River (http://www.myspace.com/bloodredriver)
Simple (http://www.myspace.com/httpwwwmyspacecomsimple)
Dead to Society (http://www.myspace.com/deadtosociety101)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Wednesday, August 22
Wolf Parade (http://www.myspace.com/wolfparade)
Plants and Animals (http://www.plantsandanimals.ca)
Noot (http://www.myspace.com/noot)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Wednesday, August 22
Polynya (http://www.myspace.com/polynyapolynya)
Waumiss (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuWYzqfJuK8)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Polynya have been around for 4-5 years or so, and they've just released their first proper album. It sounds kinda like if Stereolab listened to a lot of Cure albums.

Waumiss are Clarque and Caroline, of Shallow Be Thy Name fame. Clarque tells me that Waumiss is more loops/samples-based than SBTN was. Brilliant video by Matt Hedt here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuWYzqfJuK8

Thursday, August 23
Torch Marauder's Grappling Hook (http://home.att.net/~sandydave/torchhome.html)
Le Weekend (http://www.myspace.com/leweekendleband)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

The Grappling Hook is in some sense the culmination of everything that has come before it, namely: Torch Marauder, Analogue [II], Razzle. Epic space-metal.

Le Weekend is Matt Kalb (Hotel Motel, Audubon Park) being carried gently off the deep end by a sympathetic band of local music vets.

Thursday, August 23
Colossus (http://www.myspace.com/thecolossuswillcrushyou)
Worn in Red (http://www.myspace.com/worninred)
Constrictor (http://www.myspace.com/constrictorva)
Reservoir, Carrboro
