Friday, June 1
The Nein (http://www.thenein.com/)
Maple Stave (http://www.maplestave.com)
The Hem of His Garment (http://www.myspace.com/thehemofhisgarment)
Bull City Headquarters, Durham

Bull City Headquarters keeps booking the badass shows that ought, by
rights, to draw around five times as many peeps as will actually fit in
the joint. The Nein you know; they dodged the sophomore slump quite
handily with "Luxury," their 2nd album, different than the first but as
good, or better. Maple Stave likewise, via releasing nothing but 5-song
EPs, are thus far batting 1.000. Hem of His Garment defy not only
baseball and indie-rock metaphors, but in fact all attempts at language
of any kind. Pure sound.

Friday, June 1
Wannabeezer (http://www.wannabeezer.com/)
Manic Tantrics
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Police Cover Band. Weezer Cover Band. Chapel Hill Cover Audience?

Friday, June 1
Uncle Woody Sullender (http://www.deadceo.com/unclewoody/)
Mahasamatman (http://www.cirrusoxide.com/journal/?p=48)
Melancholy Babes (http://www.myspace.com/melancholybabes)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Uncle Woody used to live in Chapel Hill, before he lit out for Chicago,
where he roomed with Shannon Morrow, who moved back to the Triangle last
year & started/joined a bunch of bands, including the Gates of Beauty,
the Scene of the Crime Rovers, and this band, Mahasamatman, which also
contains 2/3rds of Spatula (!), *and* 2/3rds of Bicentennial Quarters
(!!). Holy crap, that's a big chunk of two of the greatest Triangle
bands of all time, and it's just 3 people.

Woody will be playing banjo, in duets with cellist Kevin Davis.

Openers Melancholy Babes are a brand-new improv duo of Dave Cantwell
(Cantwell Gomez & Jordan, ex-Razzle, ex-Analogue, The Whole World
Laughing) and Amy Wilkinson (ex-Chew Toy, ex-Bringerer).

Saturday, June 2
The Comas (http://www.thecomas.com)
The Broken West (http://www.thebrokenwest.com/)
*SONS (http://www.myspace.com/sonsofthesun)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

The Comas haven't actually been a full-fledged Chapel Hill band for
quite some time, but I'm not sure if they've ever quite become a
________ (somewhere else) band in the interim, either. *SONS love some
echoplex, some wah, some early Pink Floyd, and some colors moving on
their closed eyelids.

Saturday, June 2
Filthybird (http://www.myspace.com/filthybird)
Shipwrecker
Captain Saturn
Bull City Headquarters, Durham

Filthybird played on WXDU last week, and I have to say, they bring 100%
of the gorgeousness that's apparent on their debut CD, "Southern Skies,"
plus some unexpected freakout/brawn as well. Show of the week = anywhere
they're playing.

Captain Saturn runs Spacelab studio in Durham, and is one of the few
indie-rockers working the autoharp angle, at least 'round these parts.

Shipwrecker play Neil Young-y country-rock sitting down. Their debut
show at Joe & Jo's was so crowded I couldn't actually see them at all,
but their music was a nice accompaniment for looking at people's asses.

Sunday, June 3
Future Kings of Nowhere (http://www.thefuturekings.net/)
WXDU 88.7 FM, Durham

The Future Kings of Nowhere are kinda sorta like a pop-punk band with
acoustic guitars, though they're also somewhat like an angry
murder-ballad amphetamine-folkband. But then sometimes they have a horn
section. They're a Durham band, really, is all you need to know. 5:00
p.m. 88.7 FM or wxdu.org.

Sunday, June 3
Cantwell, Gomez, Jordan (http://www.cantwellgomezandjordan.com)
In the Year of the Pig (http://www.southernloveprod.com/ityotp.htm)
Sightings (http://www.myspace.com/sightings)
Bull City Headquarters, Durham

Dave Cantwell says, of the non-CGJ bands on this bill:

SIGHTINGS=Holy frijoles, this is pretty special: legendary NYC
noiserockers come to Durham!! What's it like?? Brutal, complex, kinda
slow, and certainly "extreme." PiL meets Melvins meets Melt-Banana meets
Pussy Galore. Or something. Forget all that--they are pretty amazing.
And loud.

IN THE BRIEF EPOCH OF THE FIRE PIG=As you might have guessed, this is a
truncated/modified version of the mighty In the Year of the Pig. Jenks
is out of town, so I'm not sure what's gonna happen, but I'm sure it
will be brilliant.

Tuesday, June 5
Attractive and Popular (http://www.myspace.com/attractiveandpopular)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Wednesday, June 6
Clang Quartet (http://www.myspace.com/clangquartet)
Melt-Banana (http://www.southern.com/southern/band/MELTB/)
Calabi Yau (http://www.calabiyau.org)
Hex Machine (http://www.myspace.com/hexmachine)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Melt-Banana are from Japan; they came out of the same Japanoise
class/era as bands like Boredoms, but they've always been a little
poppier, and they never really veered into the crazy low/slow sludge
territories. Short fast noisebursts with high-pitched singsong vocals
skittering over the top. The 3-4 times I've seen them have been
remarkably unqualified good times.

I was wearing my Calabi Yau t-shirt the other day & I thought "dang,
Calabi Yau haven't played around here in a while," and now here they
are. Weirdo spazz noise from Charlotte.

Clang Quartet you know about: Scotty's about to turn 40, but he still
plays more shows & rocks harder than just about anybody I know.

Wednesday, June 6
Thee More Shallows (http://www.theemoreshallows.com/)
The Busy World (http://www.myspace.com/thebusyworld)
The Nothing Noise (http://www.myspace.com/thenothingnoise)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Wednesday, June 6
Ear Pwr (http://www.myspace.com/earpwr)
Adventure (http://www.myspace.com/adventuresound)
Google Earth (http://www.myspace.com/googlearth666)
Juiceboxxx (http://www.myspace.com/officialjuiceboxxx)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Wednesday, June 6
We Vs. The Shark (http://www.myspace.com/weversustheshark/)
Hazerai (http://www.myspace.com/hazerai)
Barbarella (www.myspace.com/barbarellach)
Reservoir, Carrboro

Thursday, June 7
Dexter Romweber (http://www.dexterromweber.com)
Sadlack's Heroes, Raleigh

I hate the word "legendary" because it's so rarely used accurately, but
there are so many weird stories about Dex that it might just be accurate
in this case.

Thursday, June 7
Honored Guests (http://www.thehonoredguests.com/)
The Empties (http://theempties.com)
The Cave, Chapel Hill
