Saturdays in Saxapahaw Start May 5th with The Steep Canyon Rangers!

The Saxapahaw Rivermill Saturdays-in-Saxapahaw summer series starts up again this year May 5th, 2007. The weekly festivities include performances by top bands featuring bluegrass, back porch, roots, americana and old time music and a thriving Farmers Market with fresh local produce, cheese, eggs, baked goods, flowers, honey, organic meat, locally produced wine, hand made arts and crafts and more. Every week, CERES, Saxapahaw's local quality of life organization sets up exciting events and activities for children including the Famous Zipboat ( a kayak on a zipwire - low to the ground) the Environmentally Engineered Slip-N-Slide created in the shape of the Haw River, face painting, children's arts & crafts and a weekly kid's parade. The series, now in it's third year, attracts 300-400 people every weekend and draws heavily from Orange and Chatham Counties. Festivities take place every Saturday from 5pm-8pm through the end of August. Admission is free though donations are appreciated, organizers pass around a "Swan Bucket" each week for the band.

Carrboro West: Not your typical rural textile mill shut down story.
Saxapahaw has undergone a major renaissance in recent years with the rehab and renovation of the former cotton mill on the banks of the Haw River into townhomes, lofts and apartments drawing out the Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Durham RTP crowd seeking modern lofts and antique architecture in a brigadoon-like setting just a short ride from town. The historic village is dotted with quaint cottages, the former mill houses, on rolling hills above the river. Thriving non- profits, environmental organizations, a local winery, organic farms, yoga pilaties, gyrotonics and massage therapy centers, an active art scene, river access and a riverside charter school with a focus on environmental science and the arts are just a few of the special features. Plans are underway for the renovation of the Upper Mill, the former Dye House, which will be transformed into a Marketplace and Art Center, and local leaders are working to expand river trails and recreation areas in an area already popular with canoers, kayakers, hikers and cyclists.

The Saturdays in Saxapahaw program was created to bring the growing community together. "It's like a healthy happy three ring circus for the whole family with great music, fresh food and innovative activities for children" says series organizer Heather LaGarde. "There are very few places like Saxapahaw left in the world - it's like stepping back in time when you drive into the historic village and we love seeing everyone come together to support and enjoy local artists and farmers." Tom LaGarde, former UNC, Olympic and NBA basketball player runs the sound at the Haywagon Stage and oversees the series with his wife and their two young children. "We moved to Saxapahaw after over a decade in New York City," said Tom LaGarde "we've been amazed by the community, old-timers and people from around the world coming together. It is a welcoming place."

The fabulous Steep Canyon Rangers will be coming in for a special performance to kick off the summer series May 5th on the Haywagon Stage at the Meadow Amphitheater in Historic Saxapahaw. The series is sponsored by the Saxapahaw Rivermill and by local businesses including Open Eye Cafe, Fifth Season Gardening, Townsend Bertram and The Barbecue Joint offering fresh dinners for picnicers, including vegetarian options at the festival every week.

Saturday events take place outside in downtown Saxapahaw next to the Post Office. For more information, a schedule of bands and farmers, directions, pictures and more please visit www.rivermillvillage.com or call 336 376 5694.
