My long-term memory is that a lot of us said our
goodbyes to Stay Free when Carrie moved away in 1995.
I think a trip through the archives will show that
that was pretty much the shared opinion. Certainly the
New York-based Stay Free had a continuity with the
NC-based one, but it also had a closer focus and
wasn't really tied to the Old North State by anything
other than genealogy. The old version dealt with the
larger world but was also intensely local; the later
one was not.

So, to me, mourning it wouldn't be hugely different
than mourning the apparent-though-denied demise of the
Baffler, in the category of publications I admire and
often enjoy but that don't connect with me viscerally.
Or, a different way would be to compare post-1995 Stay
Free to the careers of Ryan Adams or Ben Folds. It's a
point of interest, there are people with personal
ties, but it's no longer *local* in any real sense.

But then again neither am I, so what the hell do I
know?
