The Amazing Tommy Edwards and Friends play this week in Saxapahaw, July 29. For the past 35 years Tommy Edwards has been the lead singer and guitar player of The Bluegrass Experience, one of North Carolina's longest lived and best loved traditional music groups. An innovative flat picker, He has recorded with Mike Cross, has done 4 albums with The Experience and is heard with them on 4 compilation recordings. He has two solo projects for which he wrote the majority of the material. Both have been critically and publicly well received. A song from his latest recording, "My Tears Spoiled My Aim" co-written with southern sociologist John Shelton Reed has been selected for inclusion in the inaugural southern music issue of Southern Cultures, a quarterly journal produced by The Center for the Study of The American South and published by UNC Press. Tommy will be joined by a group of talented musicians including John Worthington a well known singer, guitarist and mandolinist who has recorded with lots of folks including Alice Gerrard and his own band The Shelbys. John was in the original cast of Lee Smith's "Good Old Girls" and works with Tommy in the acoustic swing and honky tonk band, The Hot Tub of Grits. He performs a wide range of material that includes bluegrass, country and blues songs and lives in Saxapahaw.
Bands play from 6-8 on the Haywagon Stage next to the meadow amphitheater .
The Farmers' Market runs from 5-8. It's the height of the season! Blueberries, Wine, Flowers, Tomatoes, Jellies, Chutney, Honey, Tarts, Fresh Organic Breads and Baked Goods, Pork, Sausage, Eggs, Squash, Watermelon, Cantaloupe and More all grown locally and lovingly by a great bunch of local farmers - come meet them at the Market! Aimless Mini, Bee Natural, Farm Fairy, Plow Girl, Farm Fun, Green Dreams, Cane Creek, Robertson Farm, Blessed Earth, Matzah Rising, Doneda, Turtle Run, Benjamin Vineyards and many others! Local Crafts as well - Jewelry, Metal Sculpture, and Woodwork.
THIS WEEK FOR THE KIDS- Bring your suits - The Fantastic ZipBoat is up and running along with the Giant Slip-N-Slide, sprinklers games and arts and crafts for the children! Created and run by Saxapahaw's local quality of life organization CERES, with thanks to the Saxapahaw Rivermill, Anderson Homes, Great Outdoor Provision Company, and Southern States for helping make the kids activities possible!
The Saxapahaw Rivermill Farmers' Market, Music Series and Kid's Activities take place every Saturday from 5-8pm through August 26th. All events are in downtown Saxapahaw outside next to the Post Office and across from the Saxapahaw Rivermill. It's a beautiful day out and all are welcome.
