My essential Pittsboro on a Sunday:
(If you're not there for First Sunday, the monthly street fair):
1. The French Connection -- French fabrics, African art and furniture
2. Chatham Marketplace -- new food co-op in the old Chatham Mills building (once the world's leading manufacturer of woven labels)
3. Pittsboro Sporting Goods -- on 64 biz on your way into town. Something like Johnny's Sporting Goods in Carrboro, but not as fancy.
4. Side Street Gallery -- on Salisbury, right off Hillsboro Street. An ambitious and high quality gallery. At the corner, look across Hillsboro to the Edwards Antiques Building, and then look up -- that's where they make Carr Amps.
5. Beggars and Choosers -- still one of the great junque and thrift stores in the area.
6. Blue Sky Equestrian -- if you're into horses.
7. J. Henry Hardware -- Just down Hillsboro Street beyond the circle, toward Sanford. Locally owned, sells lots of paints, including a whole line of environmentally friendly paints. They've also got the biggest t-shirt you've ever seen on the wall.
8. Carolina Hardware, on Thompson -- see what a good old hardware store and small-engine repair shop looks like before the Lowe's kills it.
9. General Store Cafe -- everyone's been there, right? Burritos are great. Across the street, you'll see what some people claim is one of the country's oldest American Holly Trees. I wouldn't know, but it's huge. It also explains why there are so many holly trees around Pittsboro.
10. The cemeteries at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal and Pittsboro Presbyterian. There are former senators and ambassadors buried in these cemeteries. Also, the Pittsboro Presbyterian cemetery shares property with the Manly Law Office, which is the oldest (and, perhaps, the smallest) building in town.
11. Be around the old courthouse around noon for the brief bells concert, usually featuring very unexpected and odd music.
12. Go out to Central Carolina Community College, on 64 biz west of Pittsboro, to see their working sustainable farm. (It's small, but worth checking out.)
13. Elizabeth's Pizza -- personal favorite.
14. Don't steal my tomatoes.
