Thursday, April 20
Brunettes (
http://www.lilchiefrecords.com/brunettes/ ) , Schooner
Bickett Gallery, Raleigh

The Brunettes are from Auckland, New Zealand, which is so far from the
US sphere of influence that they can say, without a shred of
sarcasm/irony, that they're looking forward to touring through the
Southern US because of our beautiful countryside. Such openheartedness
should be rewarded with yr presence, Raleighites.

Thursday, April 20
Regina Hexaphone ( http://www.reginahexaphone.com ) , The Port Huron
Statement ( http://www.porthuronstatement.com/ ) , North Elementary (
http://www.northelementary.com )
Kings, Raleigh

Regina Hexaphone feature Jerry Kee (Dish, Duck-Kee studios, Feebles),
Sara Bell (Dish, Shark Quest, Angels of Epistemology), Chris Clemmons
(The Bettys, was it?) and Nathan Brown (Laramie UK). Plus I reckon
Margaret White if she happens to be passing through. They were, IMHO,
the highlight of the Minutemen tribute show in December, even though
(because?) their countryish/folkish "sound" is further from the
Minutemen than most of the other participants.

Port Huron Statement are long-struggling pop-like-early-Bowie-was-pop
stars, were from Boone, past few years from Raleigh.

North Elementary sort of spun off from the Comas back a long time ago,
maybe before most current Comas fans even knew about 'em. John
Harrison & his gang of basement recordists make music that sounds like
what the first Comas record would've sounded like if the drugs had
been more pure.

Thursday, April 20
Grasshopper, Scout's Honor
Reservoir, Carrboro

Friday, April 21
Straight 8s ( http://www.straight8s.com ) , Hearts and Daggers (
http://www.heartsanddaggers.com/ )
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Friday, April 21
Pyramid ( http://www.myspace.com/pyramid ) , The Prayers and Tears of
Arthur Digby Sellers ( http://www.prayersandtears.com/ ) , Meredith
Bragg and the Terminals ( http://www.meredithbragg.com/ )
Kings, Raleigh

The Prayers and Tears of Arthur Digby Sellers are a Chapel Hill band,
members of the Bu Hanan collective. They usually wind up with upwards
of a dozen people contributing various bits to their recordings, but
it's rare to get more than a half-dozen or so of the Bu Hanan folks
together at once to play a gig.

Pyramid, on the other hand, are from Charlotte, and they're an
eight-piece, although honestly I don't know if they manage to drag 'em
all along on tour either. Nevertheless, the prospect of seeing
anything more than 5 people onstage at Kings is an intriguing one.

Friday, April 21
Liz Durrett ( http://www.lizdurrett.com/ ) , Mount Moriah (
http://www.myspace.com/mountmoriah )
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Friday, April 21
The Spinns ( http://www.thespinns.freeservers.com/ ) , The Makeout
Room ( http://www.themakeoutroom.net/ )
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Stomp-and-stutter Triangle-area garagerock courtesy of the Spinns goes
head-on with snotty psych/protopunk garagerock from Asheville, the
Makeout Room (their 2005 EP features a dead-on cover of the 13th Floor
Elevators' "You're Gonna Miss Me" (well, no electric jug, but you
can't hold that against them)). These're two of the best garage-rock
bands in NC right now, and the Cavern Tavern is now & prolly always
will be the best place in NC to see a garage-rock show, so there's yr
Friday Night right there.

Friday, April 21
Second Husband ( http://www.secondhusband.org/ ) , Two Gallants (
http://www.twogallants.com/ ) , Red Smokes White (
http://www.myspace.com/redsmokeswhite )
Wetlands, Chapel Hill

Saturday, April 22
The Reputation ( http://www.reputationmusic.com/ ) , Lucero (
http://www.lucerofamily.net/ ) , Langhorne Slim (
http://www.langhorneslim.com/ )
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Saturday, April 22
Tennis and the Mennonites ( http://www.tennisandthemennonites.com ) ,
Bowerbirds ( http://www.myspace.com/bowerbirds ) , Fog (
http://www.fogtimewaster.com/ )
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham

Bowerbirds are the lovely new band of Ticonderoga's Phil Moore. Tennis
and the Mennonites have been plugging away at their full-length album
for what seems like eons now; I just checked their [*>
http://www.myspace.com/tennisampthemennonites <*] myspace page and
they've apparently blown up into a 7-piece, or something. Which might
explain the delay, and/or at least make for a good rockshow.

Saturday, April 22
Rainer Maria ( http://www.rainermaria.com/ ) , Bellafea (
http://www.bellafea.com/ )
Wetlands, Chapel Hill

Get there early enough to see Bellafea, y'all, for two reasons: 1)
their spastic staccato mix of trebly guitar+vox and giant drums will
command yr attention far more than whatever else you might find to do,
and 2) Rainer Maria are gonna look extra-crappy by comparison.

And that's partly due to Bellafea's skillz, definitely, but partly
also due to the fact that RM haven't made a decent record since "Past
Worn Searching," and now the NYTimes told me today that the new one
sounds like Rilo Kiley. Just what the world needed. If you're wanting
rock post-midnight, you'd probably be better off at the Reputation
show at Local 506, although I haven't trusted Elizabeth Elsmore since
she suckered me into buying that Sarge CD with the one good song on
it.

Saturday, April 22
Countdown Quartet ( http://www.countdownq.com/ ) , The Last Picture
Show ( http://www.myspace.com/lastpictureshow )
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Saturday, April 22
Table ( http://www.myspace.com/table ) , Lord Neck
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Tuesday, April 25
Patty Hurst Shifter ( http://www.pattyhurstshifter.com ) , Roman
Candle ( http://www.romancandlemusic.com/ )
The Flying Anvil, Greensboro

The Flying Anvil is the new rockclub in Greensboro, booked by Andrew
Dudek, who ran Gate City Noise for many years. It's apparently a big
new joint, and the current plan is for them to book a mix of the kind
of stuff that Andrew used to book into his store, and larger/better
known/more mainstream outfits that will hopefully make it easier to
pay the bills.

Patty Hurst Shifter are a rootsy Raleigh bar-rock band. Roman Candle
are from Wilkesboro, though they made their splash during their years
at UNC-Chapel Hill. I keep expecting to hear about them becoming
hugely famous, as it has long seemed like only a matter of time.

Tuesday, April 25
Fruit Bats ( http://www.fruitbatsmusic.com/ ) , Amandine (
http://www.amandinemusic.com/ ) , Sam Jayne ( http://www.samjayne.com/
)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Wednesday, April 26
Chest Pains ( http://www.myspace.com/thechestpains ) , Double Negative
( http://www.myspace.com/thedoublenegative ) , M.O.T.O. (
http://www.myspace.com/moto )
Chaz's Bull City Records, Durham

Chest Pains and Double Negative are *both* dudes-my-age,
playin-punkrock bands, the former featuring local rockcrit Greg
Barbera, ex-Jett Rink guitarist Tim Ristau, and Pleasant drummer Eric
Hermann. Double Negative feature oldschool Raleigh punks Brian Walsby,
Scott Williams, Justin Gray & Kevin Collins. And they're both really
good (although there's no telling whether my old ears are up to snuff
in this area, right?).

Wednesday, April 26
Elf Power ( http://www.elfpower.com/ ) , Instruments (
http://www.orangetwin.com/ )
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Thursday, April 27
des_ark ( http://www.des-ark.org ) , The Crimson Spectre (
http://www.slavemagazine.com/crimsonspectre/ ) , Kylesa (
http://www.kylesa.com/ ) , Giant
The Flying Anvil, Greensboro

The Flying Anvil is the new venue in Greensboro that's being managed
by Gate City Noise's Andrew Dudek. This is one of their first shows,
so I don't know much about it yet, other than that it's apparently
big, and was supposed to also incorporate a new version of the record
store.

Crimson Spectre are socialist/pro-worker ghoul-core from Greensboro;
they rule. Des_Ark is just Aimee at the moment, although she has a way
of roping people into her projects that means she might not be alone
in des_ark forever.

Kylesa are from Savannah, I think, and the only thing I've really
gleaned in 18 seconds of research is that they've got two drummers,
which is rarely a bad thing.

Thursday, April 27
Meat Weed Madness ( http://www.aidendillard.com/ )
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Nightlight sez:

Meat Weed Madness is an outrageous and surreal comedy, and the
directorial debut of Aiden Dillard. The film is set at a plantation
called Meatweed Manor, where the farmers cultivate an herb that drives
four lovely ladies mad with lust. Meat Weed Madness has been acquired
by Troma Entertainment and will be released on DVD May 2nd, in stores
and at www.troma.com. The film runs 85 minutes long and will be
introduced by Aiden Dillard. Warning: this film contains nudity,
violence, gore, drug use, and extreme home decorating from the editor
of Nest Magazine.

Thursday, April 27
Red Collar ( http://www.myspace.com/redcollarmusic ) , Apis Bull (
http://www.apisbull.com/ ) , Motorbilly (
http://www.myspace.com/motorbilly ) , Midnite Sun (
http://www.myspace.com/midnite_sun )
Marvell Building, Durham

The Marvell Building is in downtown Durham, and they've been having
punkrock/hardcore/misc shows on Thursdays for a few months now. Red
Collar aren't a hardcore band, but my friends suggest that it's clear
that at least some of them listen to Fugazi. Apis Bull are from New
Bern; they're a two-piece which include that badass drummer from The
Kickass.

Thursday, April 27
Thunderlip ( http://www.thunderlip.com/ ) , Colossus (
http://www.myspace.com/thecolossuswillcrushyou ) , Black Skies (
http://www.myspace.com/losblackskies ) , Hottness
Wetlands, Chapel Hill

Thunderlip are from Wilmington, and they make hyperactive crazy-ass
frontman Metal; Black Skies are from Chapel Hill, and given the
involvement of Kevin Clark, I guess one could say the same of them.
(you may have seen them in their earlier incarnation as The Man).

Thursday, April 27
The Juanita Family ( http://www.juanitafamily.net/ )
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Friday, April 28
Charles Latham ( http://www.myspace.com/sircharleslatham ) , Grey
Revell ( http://www.greyrevell.com )
The Cave, Chapel Hill

This is the early (7:30) show. Charles Latham sent me an email about
it:

Both Grey and his wife Patsy were OGs (original gangstas, as the kids
say) of the NYC Antifolk scene, sharing the stage with The Moldy
Peaches and their various incarnations (Adam Green, Kimya Dawson...)
and are both featured on the original Antifolk Compilation Vol. 1.

As Grey puts it, he and Patsy were "blown up to North Carolina" by
Katrina and now live in Charlotte.

The three of us will be sharing the stage in sort of a songwriter's
showdown/ twisted version of VH1 Storytellers. I really think this
night is going to have an energetic sloppiness to it and will be, of
course, antifolk as fuck. NO, it's not going to be whiny acoustic
boringness. We will all be on acid. And there will be pyrotechnics.

Friday, April 28
Destroyed Tradition ( http://destroyedtradition.com ) , Street Sharks
( http://www.myspace.com/streetsharsk ) , Big D and the Kids' Table (
http://www.bigdandthekidstable.com/ )
305 South, Durham

Friday, April 28
Fin Fang Foom ( http://www.lovitt.com/artists/finfangfoom.html ) ,
Cities ( http://www.citiesmusic.com ) , Idea of Beauty (
http://ideaofbeauty.com ) , Heads Down Thumbs Up (
http://www.myspace.com/headsdownthumbsup )
Local 506, Chapel Hill

This is the CD Release party for Cities' new self-titled debut on Yep
Roc. The 30% of it that I like is pretty good, in an echoey-guitars,
echoey drawn-out vocals, breakbeat-ish drums (i.e. Interpol/Franz
Ferdinand) kind of way.

Friday, April 28
Blag'ard ( http://www.blagard.com/ ) , Back to Blonde (
http://www.backtoblonde.com/ )
Wetlands, Chapel Hill

Blag'ard (or is that Bla'gard?) is Joe Taylor (ex-Capsize 7,
ex-Lystra) and Billy Buckley (ex-Cobra Khan, ex-Panzer, and didn't
Billy do some time in the Ghost of Rock bass chair?). Billy's playing
drums for the first time, and the other day he was talking excitedly
behind the bar at Federal about how much fucking fun he's having.

Friday, April 28
White Elephant ( http://www.myspace.com/whiteelephantch ) , Angry
Johnny and the Killbillies ( http://www.getangry.com/ )
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Friday, April 28
Shannon O'Connor ( http://shannonoconnor.com/ ) , Hearts and Daggers (
http://www.heartsanddaggers.com/ ) , The Bo-Stevens (
http://www.thebostevens.com/ )
Kings, Raleigh

Saturday, April 29
Veronique Diabolique ( http://www.veroniquediabolique.com/ )
The Cave, Chapel Hill

This is the early show (7:30), which begs the question: how will the
members of Veronique Diabolique, Durham's only French-speaking Goth
band, get themselves to The Cave in time to play a 7:30 show without
exposing their skin to that evil sunlight?

Saturday, April 29
Street Sharks ( http://www.myspace.com/streetsharsk ) , Modern
Machines ( http://www.myspace.com/modernmachines ) , The Ergs (
http://dorkrockcorkrod.com )
Chaz's Bull City Records, Durham

Saturday, April 29 - Wednesday May 3
Logical Sound Discovery
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Logical Sound Discovery is a guy named Rob Logic, who makes dayglo
psychedelic paintings, and has also been making dayglo psychedelic
synthpop for at least the past 12-14 years or so. Long enough that
I've got Logical Sound Discovery cassettes in my giant box-o-tapes at
home. The early ones sound like Prince.

Anyway, I don't know the details, but all indications are that Rob is
doing a 5-night residency at Slim's. Should be weird, to say the
least.

Saturday, April 29
Brown Mountain Lights ( http://www.brownmountainlights.net/ )
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Saturday, April 29
Cities ( http://www.citiesmusic.com ) , Megaband, Endless Mic (
http://www.trekkyrecords.com/endlessmic.html ) , Blank_Blank
The Flying Anvil, Greensboro

This is a CD-release show for the latest WUAG compilation CD, "18
Watts is Better Than None." I have to hand it to them: those kids have
put out more comp CDs in the past 5 years than XYC and XDU have put
out, combined, in the past 15. Here's what WUAG says about the show:

"This is a special CD Release Show/Party featuring three bands from
the cd: Blank_Blank, Endless Mic (Hip Hop from Chapel Hill), and
Cities. The show will be capped off by the NC Only performance of
Megaband. Megaband is the members of Cinemachanica playing the
soundtrack to the 1988 Nintendo game Megaman II, while two guys beat
the game in under 40 minutes."

Here's the lineup of the [double!] CD:

This double cd features exclusive in studio and live recordings from
both National Touring acts and North Carolina acts. The CD is broken
up into a National CD and an all North Carolina artist CD.

Saturday, April 29
Schooner ( http://www.schoonermusic.com ) , Honored Guests (
http://www.thehonoredguests.com/ ) , Joe Romeo (
http://www.myspace.com/joeromeomusic )
Local 506, Chapel Hill

This is a CD-release for the Honored Guests. Joe Romeo used to front
Fake Swedish; now he has a new band, the Orange County Volunteers.
Schooner are from Raleigh, of course, and they're everybody's favorite
Pox World Empire band (or at least they're the band mentioned most
often when I'm talking to *other* Pox bands).
