Carbonated Records is pleased to announce its inaugural release of Thursday Night Game, the debut album of the Junior Varsity Superheroes, a brand-new power-pop band from Durham, North Carolina. The album will be officially released in a CD release party on April 22nd at Chaz’s Bull City Records in Durham. Supporting acts playing at the release party include Ashley Atkins, Red Collar, and Jonas Sees in Color.

The Superheroes’ sound is a train-wreck of the eighties genres they grew up listening to, centered around the tension between metal guitarist Brian Moore and new wave synth wizard Morgan Guyton. Ranging from irresistible disco-pop to driving political ballads against the powers that be, the common denominator in the Superheroes’ music is its danceability and socially-conscious lyrics.

The album begins with two songs that would do well at a late eighties middle school dance. Garden Walls is a Petrarchan sonnet turned to music that explodes from the starting gate with sawtooth synth waves, harmonica, and a hair band guitar solo. PG-13 creates the pink butterfly landscapes of a juvenile crush with a real-life Wurlitzer and California-sounding flange guitar.

Other notable tracks include Hipster Mafioso (4), Effortless Perfection (5), and Emily (13). Hipster Mafioso is an eighties theme song played inside an echo chamber in which square waves, guitar chords, and hi-hats bounce back and forth against the bass-line. Effortless Perfection builds from a low-fi bass-line, adding Wah-crazy guitar, wailing organ, and baritone vocals to create bluesy psychedelic wickedness. Emily uses the classic hair-band combo of a double-tracked lead guitar and layered synth strings to tell the story of a tragically reclusive girl who might have been a good match for Eddie Vedder’s “Jeremy.”
