Heh, well, Glenn tried making a *large* percentage of local shows at Local 506 FREE and that didn't result in enough extra people through the door to make the math work.

At WXDU we give away free tickets to shows all the time, and the unknown bands sometimes don't even get any phone calls. There are so many competing entertainment options that "free show" doesn't even get much traction anymore. Whatever happened to bored kids?

I don't know about the scope with regards to a place like 506 or a
smaller venue, but i can tell you that one of my favorite things about
the First Avenue (which is the size of say, the Bowery or Black Cat)
was they would give away tickets to future shows at the bar, and they
would seed the bar area with like 2 for 1 tickets to the dance club.
there were so many shows I went to that I really didn't know who the
band was (Yerba Buena? What the hell, I got a free ticket), and, of
course, if I'm at a show I drink, so I was probably a net gain most
nights for the club. (especially when I was 22-26). While the First
Ave did this with lots of national touring shows, I think this could be
great for local shows. Maybe give a few to places like School kids (in
fact, the Electric Fetus, the mpls record store where Slug of
Rhymesayers used to work, also gave out free tickets), or even Duke
Coffeehouse, for example. don't know, just thinking. I mean, gee I
would've loved if just 2-3 more people had gone to the Frank Jordan
show two years ago...

i dunno, i feel less bands would want to be on it for a fee, even only
like 5 bucks. makes more sense to just make these burned cds and give
them out, once money is brought into it, it becomes more complicated.
people like things simple.
burn a cd of mp3s and put them on the counter, could life get any more
simple than that?
once it kicks off, we can easily approach someone at a paper who has a
love for music (or the free event calendar listing) to mention
something about the cds. i think we've got a couple friends at various
papers.

i would rather see the scenes united and hand out a coupon for a venue
in another town, than down the street. we are the triangle after all
and it makes since to piece it all together. someone in chapel hill who
doesn't know what the hell bull city records is could get intrigued
with a 10% card, or someone shopping here could be amazed that such and
such amazing band is playing at kings or local 506 - and they didn't
even know the club existed!
i think we need to spread it out between the cities, show people that
20 minutes really isn't that far of a drive.
