Abby Magowan is also outstanding in all categories, but then longtime Roxxotica fans already knew that.

And bespectacled bartender woman with whom I'm not on a [first | last]-name basis also rules.

In fact, I'd go so far as to estimate that at least 60% of the Federal waitstaff are *way* more attentive and professional than the circumstances (it is, after all, a bar on Main St. in Durham which is often inconveniently overrun by assholes of the D___ U_______ variety (among countless other varieties) (um, technically including Rick!, I guess, at least when he's drunk)) would render probable.

And I suppose those of us who've spent our whole lives in college towns should be used to the strange juxtapositions that make them so simultaneously maddening & gratifying.

while i, too, have fallen victim to the Federal's legendary
Disappearing Waitress, i would like to straighten the record.

it's true that the federal's service can be spotty, negligent, and
downright shitty. but it is also true that the best service i have
ever received on a consistent basis is provided by a waitress at the
federal.

her name is kate. every monday night, members of the WXDU board (and
assorted, affiliated geeks) meet in the back room of the federal. she
almost always waits on us. she knows our regular orders, our
particularities, and can take a good guess at which of the specials
each of us would like.

our relationship was almost a fraught one. you may not have guessed
that i am a loudmouth. well, it happened one evening that a gratuity
got added to our check. i was tipsily outraged. "waiters only do
this," i declared indiscreetly, "if they think you are a motherfucking
deadbeat. fuck that. we tip twenty percent each and every time we're
here." and on and on.

the whole time i was ranting, members of my table were nudging each
other uncomfortably. you can guess why. so, i turned around, and
there was kate. she wasn't pissed, exactly. she wasn't laughing,
exactly. she was kind of doing both.

anyway, she took the grat off the bill; we tipped her, like, 27% (the
asshole surcharge); and our relationship has blossomed ever since.

once, she even cleared out a table of lingering customers so that i
could get a table in the non-smoking section. she is just that
awesome!

I have to concur, as some of the worst, and some of
the slowest (they can be mutally exclusive), service I
have recieved in recent memory has been at Federal on
several different occasions. Right now they are
hitting right around the Mendoza line, with 1 out of 5
visits being decent. I keep going back because the
food really is pretty amazing.
But I would be back more often if I felt confident
that I would get waited on within 30 minutes of being
seated, and if after an hour wait my food actually
came out as I ordered it, 30 minutes ago.
